Ok gardening people, I have a few questions

1 - I had some busy lizzies which were in a pot with otehr plants. The other plants have all died off, and been removed, but the Busy lizzies are still flowering. Do I just leave them in pot over winter, or remove them?

2 - Lavendar plant in a tub, will it be ok outside and in tub voer winter? Or would it be better to transplant it into garden? (which is where I hope to ahve it when it grows

3 - Fushcia plants - 1 in a tub on it's own, 1 in a bigger tub, other plants have been removed. Again, can i leave them in tub outside over winter?

Thanks

watching as i have lavendar plants in tubs outside

I'm no expert but I have a few pots with all the above.

The fushcias will need protecting from the frost soon so I would put them somewhere very sheltered and cover them up. I say this because every year mine get killed by the frost and snow. I should learn.

You may as well leave the busylizzies in the pot for a while. They can go on for quite a while. I think they are annuals(?) so will deteriorate eventually.

My lavendar does ok in a pot but again needs to be in a sheltered area and protected from frost. Mine always looks grim during winter but picks up again with a feed and manicure in the early spring. Grin

Forgive me if I'm not totally accurate. I'm sure there are lots of far more knowledgeable gardeners out there.

I don't have agreenhouse so can't put them in there. Would besdie the shed or in the shed be ok overnight and bring them out in the morning?
Also what would I cover them with

Some fuchias are hardy - I had one that lived outside in a tub for years, though last winter did kill it off. It would look like a bundle of twigs by the end of winter but would regrow happily. Others aren't, I succumbed to buying a beautiful tender one this year and am wondering what to do with it now (it will either have to be on the garage windowsill or outside with some fleece)

If you've still got the label it should say if its supposed to be hardy or not; usually the ones with the big showy flowers are tender.

Yes, that's another good idea. Buy some fleece from a gardening centre to insulate your fuschia.

GrimmaTheNome · 11/10/2010 21:01

I've never actually used fleece (wish I had last year!) - do you just drape it over and leave it or do you have to take it on and off, does it matter if it gets wet?

shodatin · 30/10/2010 23:21

The busylizzies are annuals and will die off with first frost and are hardly worth transplanting, in my opinion.
Lavender will be safer in the border, so will the fuchsias as frost can freeze roots.
Fleece is good stuff and can stay in place - unless it's windy when needs replacing. I use a few paperclips to hold mine in place, and/or twiggy branches, also have wrapped a few very large containers in it (roots again)

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 31/10/2010 15:01

You can leave the fleece on all the time, as it lets light and water through. It tends to get blown around a lot by the wind, so it may be best to make some sort of contraption with bamboos and string - think miniature bell tent - to hold it all in place. Don't use plastic, as it isn't breathable.

I think whether the lavender is better off in the post or the ground depends very much on the ground. If you have cold wet clay (as I do) you may find that the plant is happier to stay in its pot than be in heavy clay soil which may be frozen for weeks on end. Move the pot close to the house wall, though, to minimise the chance of its freezing.
