Can anyone identify this?

The previous occupants of our house were stupid in so many ways but the ultimate demonstration was in planting this plant. It has a large root system, grows very fast and has orange sap that stains your hands. My DW dug most of it out and I've tried various weedkillers but still it comes back. Can anyone identify it and suggest a way of getting rid of it please?

looks like a baby oak tree! (i don't know much though only guessing) maybe a squirrel burried a nut

Is it celandine?

My grandmother used the sap to kill her warts [boak]
Sorry I have no idea how to kill it but if you have the name you might be able to research it better.

how big are those leaves?

MisterW · 18/09/2010 20:41

It's not an oak tree. The leaves are paler than oak. I thought it might be celadine but the flowers look different. It grows very tall (6 feet plus), has flower spikes with little flowers on and the stems are smooth and pale green.

The leaves in the picture are about 4 inches across but they grow to 6-8 inches.

what are the flowe'rs colour? It might help.

Just keep spraying with total weedkiller. Even if it doesn't die straight away it will eventually whatever it is - unless you have Japanese Knotweed - but don't worry it isn't that!

you need some stuff called SBK

Our house's previous occupants had a facination with budlija and that stuff takes some killing.. SBK did it :)

MisterW · 18/09/2010 21:53

That SBK looks interesting but the plant isn't at all woody.

I can't remember what colour the flowers are as we try not to let it grow that much before we cut it down.

fortyplus, I've been using a glyphosate weedkiller which kills the visible plant but it is guaranteed to be back after a couple of weeks. Can you recommend an alternative that is more effective?
