growing hyacinths in water

I've just got some hyacinth bulbs for DCs but can only find instructions for planting in a pot. I've got some of those special glasses that you can see the root growing in, but can't quite remember what to do - I think bottom of bulb needs to touch the water, then put in dark warm place until shoot appears? Is this right or can it go in garage??

pour in enough water so that its almost touching the roots. Then put it in cool cupboard or garage (high up away from possible mice or slugs)
bring out in late feb early march.

Watch out incase you need to top up the water.

Love hyacinths!

If you put a bit of charcoal in the water, it stops it from going stagnant and smelly.
