Fruit tree pruning

Our plum tree has grown up with two branches in a V shape but the weight of fruit and some strong winds have caused one to partially split off from the trunk. It's still partially attached but is now mainly resting on the ground. I want to cut it off but I'm not sure whether this is a good idea or when to do it. I think that if I leave it through the winter, it will sustain more damage.

Should I just go ahead and cut if off and if so, do I need to put anything on it?

Also, our apple tree has a branch which is dead, should I go ahead and cut that off too?

I think you can prune fruit trees in the autumn.

You can certainly prune in the autumn, justbe sure that you prune at an angle that doesn't collect water in the wound; ie so the water drips off.

Be mindfull of the collar of the branch, if you cut in to that it won't be v.happy either.

Maybe an idea to thin the branches of the plum tree if they are very heavily laden.

As for the apple tree, with and plant you should always prune dead growth off as it is a strain to the plant. Don't be scared.. lop it off !

If you are thinking about thinning it out it may affect the amount of fruit borne the next year depending on how hard you cut back.
