For the very first time ever I have grown cucumbers, and now I have a question

We picked the first cucumber earlier this week, which was very exciting. To be fair, the poor plant has probably been slightly underwatered, due in part, to being away a fair bit over the summer, and in part to pure laziness forgetfulness. The texture of the cucumber reflected this. It was a little on the dryish side. It was still okay, but not quite the idyllic fresh produce I'd hoped for.

The skin was quite tough too. Is this also due to underwatering? Or did I pick it too late/too early?

cucumbers are at least 90% water so I think the under wateing may of had something to do with it Wink
although you can get diferent types.I pick mine before they get too big !!!

Thanks.

In my absolute numpty novice-gardener mind there was the thought that as the cucumber grew bigger the skin might stretch thinner. Confused Guess not! Grin

I've had a fab crop this year and am still picking after the first one 3 months ago. Yes, lots and lots of water is needed. I was a bit slow off the mark at the beginning and our first few were very bitter, but after being more generous they are much better.

Even if the skin is stll a bit thick you can always peel it....
