Trachelospermum jasminoides - experiences please

I'm thinking of purhcasing some mature trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine) for a south facing fence. The priority is privacy screening above the fence but the bonus would be the fragrance.

It was recommended to me as virtually evergreen and a better choice than Lonicera Halliana or Hall's prolific because the latter have woody stems, whereas the star jasmine retains leaves lower.

However, I've read that star jasmine is only half hardy. Would it die in the first winter frosts/ snow? I'm in the south-east section of the UK.

Has anyone else good or bad experiences with this climber?

I have several in various places in our garden (South, West and East facing walls) and they have been hardy for me, even last winter (we live in Norfolk).
I agree its a better bet for screening than honeysuckle.
If your priority is privacy then I would consider planting Solanum as well, either the white or blue form, these are much faster growing than Trachelospermum and should keep their leaves in an average winter...

Thanks for the advice, Pannacotta. I do need something to grow quickly as the neighbours have a trampoline adjacent to the fence and the incessant bouncing/ shrieking/ staring in and calling at us merits speedy action!! I'll look into Solanum too. Smile
