Hi all,

I'm off on hols to Cornwall, and wondering what gardens I should see.

We're planning the big names - Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan.

What else would people recommend?

Trebah
Lanhydrock

JaMmRocks · 04/08/2010 11:03

Trelissick

GrendelsMum · 04/08/2010 13:04

Ah, brilliant. My neighbour just recommended Trebah, too.

Looks like the voting is (so far)

Trebah +++
Lanhydrock ++
Glendurgan ++
Trelissick +
Trengwainton +

We're actually staying in the NT cottage at Trelissick, so I'm hoping to sneak round the gardens there after hours.

Ooh if that's where you're staying you should hop on the King Harry Ferry and go to the Smugglers Cottage for something to eat/afternoon tea, tis lovely (and I'm not just saying that cause I know the manager )

GrendelsMum · 05/08/2010 10:26

Will do!

Thanks everyone.

Trewithen Gardens, at Probus.

Have a lovely time GM

This place was fab for unusual plants when I last visited Cornwall and would highly recommend it. Brilliant nursery.

I would also have a look at the NGS website to see if any national collection holders are open when you are there.

Thank you - I'm looking forward to it and will report!

I would go to Trebah and Glendurgan before Eden & Heligan

GrendelsMum · 08/08/2010 10:30

Ah, turns out that we're staying at Glendurgan not Trelissick [disorganised and vague], so Trebah and Glendurgan it shall be!

although, Trebah & Glendurgan are quite similar, so if staying at Glendurgan maybe you should go to Eden or Heligan.

Have been to Eden 2 or 3 times, 1st time I was very disappointed - mainly because it wasn't what I was expecting, although I don't know what I WAS expecting, and also had just returned from 2 years in the tropics - so the tropical dome seemed, umm, rubbish.
2nd time more enjoyable (and several years later) as knew what to expect.
3rd time, year later with different person who wanted to go, ok.

Heligan, ds1 (2.8yo at the time) loved, wanted to go back and explore some more after lunch. Good, but for different reasons to Trebah & Glendurgan.

To be fair though, have also been to a number of others, and enjoyed all of them.

Hi all

We went to

Eden
Trelissick
Glendurgan
Trebah
Kestle Barton (small new garden with prairie style planting by James Alexander-Sinclair)
Dyrham House (near Bristol, on the way down)

I was taken aback by how much I enjoyed the Eden Project - I agree that the tropical biome is a bit unexciting, but I thought the rest was absolutely terrific - no-one has ever mentioned how well planted it all is. Spectacular - real plantsman's garden on a huge scale.

I preferred Glendurgan to Trebah - my friend liked Trebah best out of all the gardens, so no accounting for tastes.

No NGS gardens open near where we were, sadly - we'd just missed one that was open the previous day.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
