When do I stop?

Ok, have lots of containers pots in garden as soil is crap. Anyway, have been repotting the plants as they grow into bigger pots. But, when do I stop doing this? My pots are getting bigger and bigger and I just seem to be endlessly moving plants from one pot to another.
Help before I end up with pots the size of bathtubs.

Depending on what you're growing, it could be that the plant will simply grow to the size of the pot (iyswim) and get no bigger. Like bonsai trees.

Sort of.

I think it depends on what you're growing. Most plants and shrubs will restrict their growth if their roots are restricted. You could try leaving them for an extra season/year and only re-pot to a larger pot if they look as though they are suffering.

The plants sometimes start to look a bit sad and almost dying. Then I move them to a bigger pot and they bounce back to life.
Mainly the plants are Hosta, Hebe, Cypress Fir and some Palms.

Could you try feeding them when they look sad and dying? Maybe the potting material has just run out of goodness.

Did feed them but they still looked sad.
What is the best potting material to use if I want to keep permanant container plants?
Have just been using bog standard compost.
