Dd looking at 3rd option for an A Level. Local college has just started classical civilisation A Level. Dd is very strong in English Lit and really enjoys History. Has anyone any experience of it and how their dc found it?

Thanks in advance.

My son loved it. Very essay based so suits your DDs interests.

As PP says it is very essay based. It does feature a lot of Greek/Roman literature as well as history so would suit someone with an English lit ability. Employers & uni's like it because like RE, it shows good essay, analytical, exploration and understanding skills. DC liked it a few years back and I enjoyed it when I did it back in the 80's.
I'm so glad to see the subject reappearing on the A-level curriculum again after it was deemed old fashioned in the 90's and fell out of favour. I also did Greek Literature at O-level so there's always hope that it will reappear on the GCSE syllabus at some point too.

I did GCSE and loved it - we read about 6 poems and plays (Odyssey, Medea, Electra etc) and learned about various ages of amphoras/art works/how the home functioned/legal & ethic systems and a bit of Latin, if that helps with what to expect? I really wanted to take it at A Level but my dad scoffed and said I would end up working for Radio 4 and forbade it. I wish he had let me as it was such a passion and I still really regret not taking it. Thankfully it is becoming relevant again now so people are enjoying it again. Nolan inadvertently encouraging it even though his Americanised version of Odysseus was rather whitewashed, no doubt.

I love your Dad’s view that that would be the worst possible outcome! 😆

I really enjoyed it, but it was a long time ago as I'm 42.
Mix of English lit, history and maybe sociology or anthropology.

I know! My fave thing to do is listen to it these days!

Octavia64 · 17/08/2026 15:24

Yes I did it.

mix of history and literature.

we did Antigone (drama) and parts of the Iliad plus Athens and some Roman history.

great a level. I also did history and it fits very well.

MagicalMystical · 17/08/2026 15:26

Son has just done it and really enjoyed it. Ancient Greece, Homer, that kind of thing. Any former Percy Jackson fans would get on well with it.

PhotoDad · 17/08/2026 15:30

My DD took it as an AS alongside Ancient History, and they worked together very well. A lot of it is "English Literature but applied to Greek and Latin texts in translation."

southbailey · 17/08/2026 16:23

Back in the day I did it alongside English lit and history and it was a perfect mix.

Beaa82 · 17/08/2026 22:01

Thanks so much.
Dd has already applied for Law, Psycology and Sociology but its tempted to substitute the Sociology for it.

All your replies are v.helpful, thank you!!

Dd loves it. Despite being her wild card it’s actually her favourite A level. They have a great enthusiastic teacher. Her stength is eng lit it’s a similar skill set to that.

MildlyMoist · 17/08/2026 22:06

I read Archaeology at university and lots of my peers had taken it as a precursor - this was in the 90s. It’s at least as useful as sociology and if she’s interested in history it’s a good match and more interesting in my book.

TBH I would drop the law. If she's interested in law at uni or as a career, the A level is not well thought of.

JuliettaCaeser · 18/08/2026 23:24

Don’t do law A level if you want to do law. Trust me. Classics would be far better viewed.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 19/08/2026 23:20

@Beaa82 For a high tarrif law course, those three A levels, even with the substitute make no sense. The best combinations include 2 of English lit, History, languages and maths. A third most certainly can be Law. Cambridge have it on their list of third A level choices. As they do the others she’s looked at. If she wants a middling university go ahead but the standard subjects I’ve listed are the ones Cambridge recommends for Law so you know you have a chance everywhere else.

AlwaysRightISwear · 19/08/2026 23:23

I reckon OP,s DC would be best off doing English, History and Classical Civ.
