Alevels for physiotherapy or law

Dd is split between these (very different!) career paths. She has chosen English literature, psychology and biology for September. Would this combination be ok for both degree courses? It would be great if she could keep her options open for as long as possible.

Another science subject, alongside biology is often asked for to do physiotherapy. Although psychology is called the science of mind and behaviour, it’s seen as a weak science option.

English and psychology are good subjects for a law degree.

What about Law a-level?

What about Law a-level?

Been told to not do it as universities don’t like it. Dds school don’t offer it either.

I’ve just checked the physio entry requirements Southampton, Hertfordshire and Oxford Brookes. Both ask for one “pure” science. Psychology counts at OB. So your daughter would be fine with this combo to keep options open for physio and law.

I would avoid psychology it’s not appreciated by all admissions tutors. Maths would be a better option to keep options open

SlenderRations · 10/01/2026 11:54

Definitely not law

lovingsummerdays · 10/01/2026 12:18

I think the combo is fine and quite a common combination for those wanting to keep options only. Psychology is classed as a science for most subjects /uni and unless you are doing Medicine (when I would say pick the ‘pure’ sciences) I would say it’s a good choice.
Don’t take maths unless you are very good at it and love it.

ramonaquimby · 10/01/2026 12:20

You don't need maths for a physio degree
my dc did biology, PE and psychology for physio.

kohlrabislaw · 10/01/2026 12:22

My DD is doing psychology, biology and geography. She is looking at following a bio science / social science route and of all the courses she has looked at, psychology is accepted as a science a level.

She doesn’t want to do maths or engineering at uni. There’s no reason to swap psychology for maths at all. Psychology is a perfectly acceptable, and academically challenging a level. I’ve just checked the entry requirements for law at Oxford. It recommends an essay subject but it’s not essential.

Why does MN have an obsession with maths (or science )A levels?!

user2848502016 · 10/01/2026 14:10

Yeah that sounds fine, biology and psychology will both count as science subjects so fine for physiotherapy (although she would have to check entry requirements for individual unis).
No specific requirements for Law so these are fine as a combination of science and essay based subjects.
What is she like at maths? Swapping psychology for maths is worth considering but only if she’s confident she can get a good grade.

Why though? What would be the benefit of that unless she loves maths and / or wants to do a degree where maths is needed? It’s not necessary for law or physio?

ineedhelp37 · 10/01/2026 15:09

It’s a hard no for maths. She’s predicted an 8 but she hates it!

This is nonsense.

Her choices are fine for both careers

I have a sibling who is a dept head at Oxford. General rule of thumb for admissions is that one ‘ology’ of your 3 is absolutely fine (psychology, sociology, criminology etc). She should choose what she thinks she will enjoy.
