AS Sociology exam

My DD was predicted a B in her AS sociology and has been working at that level consistently all throughout the year- she received b in her unit 1 and u in unit 2 exams. She is really disappointed with her u result and asked for her script to see what went wrong.

On the cover page of her script (WJEC) there is a typed message that states ‘Clerical error script- item level data may not match mark awarded.’ The marking is very difficult to understand but it is low, there are two initials signed on the front cover, also 1 number in the total box which is crossed out and a different number written above it so I looks like it has been marked by more than 1 person and scoring amended slightly.

My DD didn’t feel that the paper was terrible on the day, albeit more difficult than unit 1. Having had sight of her script she feels that what she has written is still worth more than her failing score but does acknowledge that she doesn’t have the questions in front of her to verify that she did answer what she was asked. For example in a 20 marker, the examiner has noted that she has hit ao1 and ao3 seven times in the question but she received a score of 2/20- would this be typical?

Her teacher is not in school until the end of next week. Has anyone had experience of the clerical error message or know what it means? Surely if it has been marked by two people that would mean the grade would be sufficiently verified?

WJEC in Wales, or Eduqas?

Is paper 2 Research Methods?

If there are two sets of initials that means it was part of a sample - so the original examiner sent it to their team leader to check the marking was accurate. The team leader is an experienced senior examiner.

A clerical error usually means either the examiner’s adding up was wrong, or depending on the question, perhaps they’ve used the wrong bit of the mark scheme. For example - say a question was out of 10, the bands might go 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 etc. But a question out of 20 the same bands would be 1-4, 5-8 etc. So if an examiner accidentally uses the wrong marking grid for a question the score awarded is wrong, even though they’ve marked/judged it accurately.

I hope that makes sense!

OK, I teach Eduqas but paper 2 is roughly the same and probably the same set of markers. We had beyond bizarre marking of paper 2 this year ( think students who got full marks in other questions suddenly getting 3/30). I don't know quite what has gone on with them this year. I suspect they have found it hard to recruit good examiners. I'd definitely request a review especially as it looks as if the paper was already flagged.
