BTEC/T level/other vocational 25/26

Hello all. My DS will hopefully be starting a level 3 extended diploma in September (assuming he gets the grades). I know very little about BTECs having come through the A level route myself. So I’d love to have a support thread for parents of kids taking vocational qualifications this year.

@Sisublondie Oh she's had a provisional since she turned 17, useful for ID if nothing else. ( When she was 15 she was queried for buying a 12 rated dvd).

Ideas for jobs come from lots of thinking, googling and occasional late night inspiration.

@Sisublondie..
Feel the same wrt Catherine O Hara 💔
I got through a very tough time watching schitts creek on repeat. We still use lots of moira-isms in our house 💔
Have a good time bowling 🎳 we are going to the theatre tomorrow and dd is off to a party
Have a good weekend, folks x

Oh, no, you are going through the same 💔, it’s so so sad, isn’t it? Schitts Creek seems to have been a crutch to so many people… did you watch the documentary? I do have a massive crush on Dan Levy/ Daniel Rose, too, but that’s really interesting. So, you know what I mean, you can just pop on Season 1, Ep 1, and roll it on through, so you don’t have to give much care as to what to watch, or even “ what’s on in the background”, it’s the perfect “ distraction technique”, and you can just sort out whatever needs dealing with, knowing you’re going to feel better afterwards.

I did buy some SC books and stuff, one quiz book was funny, took it on holiday and the boys quizzed me. It was phrases, characters, whatever, and DS was pseudo impressed, yet repelled that I nailed them 🤷‍♀️🙄😹!

Anyway, I found this ….https://x.com/libertyjen/status/2017412181474861552?s=42

What a fantastic answer 💕

…and enjoy the theatre!!!! 🎭… is it something you’ve been desperate to see?!

Unsure as to bowling. We have literally never been “ as a family. Been for DS’s birthdays a few times, but it’s not like we are regulars… so, a Saturday afternoon in a shopping mall bowling alley…….. need to find my CBD gummies I got half price at Boots! 😹

Hope your DD’s have a lovely weekend, too x

Thanks for the ideas!!

Bless her, she must have been 😫 to be asked for ID, then!

Have a lovely weekend 😻!

Evening all! Well, I have had a total weep fest! I was chatting to DS, DS’s mate and DH when I got Sky news alert on my phone, so instinctively glanced down… apologies to those who may not have heard of her/not fans, but reading that Catherine O’Hara has died made me literally burst into tears. Poor DS looked confused as hell, and I tried to get out why I’d just burst into tears, but I just sounded insane! I had Schitts Creek on repeat during Covid, just kept scrolling on on the TV in the kitchen, and watching Moira etc kept me marginally sane after my best friend died. Plus, I loved her in anything, was watching Pain Hustlers earlier today, randomly ( snow cancelled 🧘‍♀️ 🙄!), and she was just fab full stop. If I’m having a crappy day, can just shove any episode of Schitts Creek on, and mood lifted! Anyway……. DS19 messaged from uni when he heard the news, which is sweet, and DS gave me a hug ( so rare!) . Sounds ridiculous, I know, and I prob had a weep for my BF, as I’ve kept that all bottled up, and also worries for my mum. Anyway….. chin up! It’s been nice reading the thousands of comments online and rewatching.

@swampwitch0.. Yay to the wine!!! 🍷 and trash TV! What did you find to watch?! I’ve got Under Salt Marsh on?
Sorry about DD1.. I’d be lost, too. Just a big hug 🤗. I guess, and her knowing you’re there for her? She’s lucky to have you ….x
Good that your Mum is slightly better…. It’s troubling, isn’t it? Makes you yearn for an earlier time when we were “ just” worrying about DC!
Good, too, that piece on track for Friday, and she is already cracking on next project! Great as to the presentation going well! I’m guessing she’s hoping the groups idea isn’t picked cause she’ll be stuck with them?! 🤷‍♀️

I’ve got bowling with DS, DH and DS “ friend” tomorrow. It is so random that I have zero idea how it will go! I think DS arranged it to avoid revising for the English Paper 2 much exam he has on Monday morning…. Which I did not find out about until I’d paid for it! 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙄😹!!

I hope you have a good rest of eve! 🍷 📺 💖

Another one very sad about Catherine O'Hara. It feels like Moira Rose has died too, so it's actually double grief - and I am usually not that bothered when actors die.
Only 71 though, she had so much more to give.

I hope everything else works out for you and you have a good weekend.

Sisublondie · 31/01/2026 13:32

@LarkspurLane

Oh, I totally agree- if it’s someone I like watching I’m momentarily “ Ah… that’s sad”, and have perspective. But, it was like a bit of a gut punch. There is a thread that was set up last night, I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there are obviously tons feeling like us ( except one poster….. but she soon got shut down. Just rude!). You remember the Ep where “the internet said she was dead”? That is so poignant now- because you really want it to not be true! I find it really interesting/touching/lovely reading of others shock and grief, too. She almost felt like she was one of your friends or family, like no-one else knew her, and it’s surprising seeing other people equally gutted!! And, yes, 71 is way too young and the world has been cheated… 😿.

I do love the link I posted. If I’d seen her in an airport, and plucked up the courage to speak to her, and she’d answered that, I think I’d have had to give her a huge hug! 🤗… what a sad loss to her boys and DH, I hope it’s some comfort seeing how loved she was.

I hope you have a beautifully chilled weekend!

Afternoon all! Anyone else having a grin, grey day?! I’ve just spent two hours putting an IKEA style wardrobe hanging thing up for eBay clothes ( brought some stuff from mum’s house)… realised at the end I’ve put the poles the wrong way round fir the screw holes and hanging bits! 🙀… anyway!! I came on as DS has English Paper 2 mock tomorrow…… Just taken lunch in, he is reading something, couldn’t ascertain what, and he’s in a perky mood so I wasn’t about to hassle and ask ( I’d mentioned revision earlier!), but, just to say, HOW great that we have all got through the en masse GCSE Hell!!

Anyhoo! Back to the grindstone. @swampwitch0, hope the 🎭 was good!

Take care, all! 😻

I am thankful on a daily basis that there will be no more big blocks of exams. Ever! I mean, they could go into a career where they take exams, or shock me and go to uni but basically it will be their exams and not mine (the GCSEs were very much a shared endeavour).

We have two exams in May, Core maths paper 1 and 2, then I think 2 or 3 more next year, all spread out. (That is assuming he passed his exam in January, if not, add that to May.)

Morning! Ooooh, when does he get his results? Which exam was it? The Core Maths, please remind me, is he doing GCSE in addition to his BTEC?

How I love your description!! “ it will be THEIR exams”!
……..😻😻😻!

Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification, like an AS Level, so done in one year rather than 2. This means we will be around on A Level results day this summer and joining in the fun.
It would be a great qualification to have but it sits on the side of his course - if they don't pass it, they doesn't retake it.

I will hop over to the new thread now, see you there!

Ahhhhh! Gotcha!!! Well, I hope that goes well, as it certainly sounds beneficial to have! ( ahhhhhhh, results day! My birthday is 20th, DS19 is 21st, so it can really make/break a birthday!).. But, hoping it’s excellent for you!

I did not realise the new thread was up!!! Duh!!! Righto. I’ll see you, there!!! 😻
