Fines for term time holidays?

Ds is going into college in September.
Never had holiday during term time, but next summer I would love to take him abroad for 1 week.
He has never been abroad, or on any holiday longer than 4 nights.
Do colleges issue fines the same as schools do?

Every school is different with regards to fines and so probably colleges are too.
I'm not sure that September is a good time for your son to have time off while he's only just starting- they'll be just getting settled and making new friends.

There are no fines for post-16 but each college will have its own rules on minimum attendance to stay on the course (unlikely one week will cause any issues).

No fines at college age as the children are post-CSA and no longer your responsibility education-wise.

Holiday wil be next summer, not September

Apologies - I read it wrong. I'd just check when the exams/coursework deadlines will be & then work around that. Happy holidays.

AFAIK no, but @LizzieBet14 is right about Y12 exams. He'll want to be able to prep for them well and sit them all. Predictions are such an important part of UCAS applications.

We made a mistake in taking DD away for May half term of Y12 when her exams started the following Monday. Totally spoilt the holiday for her. It hadn't occurred to me they might run Y12 exams during the main A level period.

Put up with it, you will have plenty of time for hols in a couple of years or less.

When does college term finish?
Round me Colleges tend to finish early July, so you could have 2 weeks after college before school term ends and peak prices. Maybe?

@Stopthatknocking look up the end of term date and go after that. A Levels (or equivalent) are too important to miss a single day of teaching. You can plan a big holiday for the summer of year 13 when he will be finished by the end of June.

There won't be a fine.

FE settings often have students missing for various things, driving test, religious holidays, work experience.

The only one we (as teachers) struggled with was a student doing jury duty that involved a long absence.

Billybagpuss · 30/07/2025 06:52

Wait until he starts and gets his schedule for the year. The end of the year is often a rush to get assignments done and they sometimes need to be completed to pass the year to be allowed to continue.

once your post 16 is not about the fines it’s about the qualifications.

however they do sometimes finish earlier than regular schools.

Thanks all.
There won't be a levels or assignments, it's an SEN course, stuff like maths, English, life skills etc.
That's why I wasn't worried about that, I know 1 week won't make any difference there. The pace is very slow, it's not like he will miss essential learning and not be able to catch up.

We have booked now, he will miss 3 days. And perhaps he won't even have much timetabled anyway, as they said he will be in 4 days a week maximum anyway, so likely he may only miss 2 days.

He has only ever had 8 days off sick, total, in his whole school career, so I'm not too worried about the impact here.

Google AI summary seems to think colleges don't fine, but I didn't plough through to find the original source.
