Functional maths level 2

Hi all I'm have posted previously about my ds struggles in college due to lecturers constantly leaving etc. E decided to go back college on another course but would like to eventually go on to apprentiship but cant without maths or English. However my ds has dyslexia and struggles with maths and english. He got a grade 3 in English and 2 in maths. He has resat them but we dont get results yet and he's adamant he would not have passed maths.

I've heard about functional maths level 2. The college accept them but dont teach them. Are there any online? I've seen some but they're like £200 for the exam itself. Does anyone have any experience or any free online ones than include exam? My ds did find one on wowcer but im very doubtful this is what he actually needs its woth a exam board called cpd if anyone knows what this is.

We are so stressed with this whole situation and I want the absolute best for him. I dont want him to feel like he fails all the time. He now has a qualification he cant use because the lecturers all left which left them with one tutor who never did practical with them which gave the students no experience. His friends all have apprentiships so this makes him feel even more like a failure because he cant apply all due to not having maths and english.

Please help a stressed mum!

What qualification does he have?

There may be teaching of FS in the community. Might be worth checking at local library or community hub if they know of any providers or ask the LA education department who has the contract for it. Online might be possible but he shouldn't need to pay if government funded.

This is my understanding, having looked into it for DD (also waiting GCSE resit result)

There is a bit of a black hole in funding unfortunately.

You have to be 19 on 1st Sept of the academic year to qualify for free functional skills tuition - there are various online providers and you can sit the exam online from home too. Or there may be free face to face courses for adult learners.

If you are 16-19 then you are expected to be at college with college providing maths tuition alongside your full time course, or alongside an apprenticeship. As you have found out many colleges don't actually offer FS L2.

NB The English FS is definitely imo more accessible for the dyslexic student. We haven't tried maths FS but from the outside it isn't so clear cut as FS has lots of wordy questions and misses out less wordy topics such as algebra.

Tha is for replies. He really struggled at school but never got screened or anything. I was on the phone to the school all the time with no help so failed everything. He was then diagnosed in college. He has got a level 2 plumbing which he wanted to do a level 3 apprentiship but because he hadnt got grade 4 math and english he cant do that. He sailed through level 1 but all tutors left on level 2 so all students were behind as they had no practical sp out of 30 only 3 kids actually went on to do a plumbing apprentiship. He really wanted to do it but been told by the college if he doesn't pass maths or English it's not possible to do level 3 so he applied for construction property maintence instead.

The maths functional skills level 2 is very wordy.

some students find it easier some find it a lot harder.

there’s an example paper here.

you can buy workbooks to have a look at.

to be honest, if he got a 2 at gcse maths most colleges would be teaching him functional skills level 1 and then trying to work up to level 2.

Thanks for this. He has dyslexia and a working memory decifit so he really struggles with words staying in his head. The way he explains it is he reads the question over and iver again and by the time he's tried to work it out he forgets. Practical wise he's absolutely fine it's getting the info to stay in. I hope this makes sense. To be honest that paper threw me im useless at maths so im no help to him at all unfortunately.
