IB results chat

Seen a lot on WIWYKAU suggesting many people are disappointed with IB results today. This was not my experience. I just wanted to start a thread for anyone connnected with IB results to chat and be open. A place for support and camaraderie and no judgement.

Anyone?

Hello! Yes, wiwikau made grim reading yesterday, sounds like it was a tough year. That seems also to have been the case in DD's cohort - lots missing their grades. It's so tough it being a Sunday too; there's no action they can take at all.
DD got what she needed and was delighted with her overall result. She's going to study medicine.
What are the next steps for your child, @Thethingswedoforlove?

Thethingswedoforlove · 07/07/2025 07:19

Brilliant and congratulations @maybemedmum . My eldest is doing medicine so I totally get how wonderful that feels as a parent! My IB dd is off to Warwick which was her absolute dream. She found the exams super hard but somehow beat her offer by 3 points and got 776 in her highers so we
coudlnt be prouder. Actually I am most proud of her consistent effort throughout the whole course as it is so so hard isn’t it for the whole time. I can’t imagine how hard applying for medicine must have been when doing IB- my elder daughter chose a levels so didn’t have to juggle ucat/ interviews etc with the demands of the IB. Where is your dc off to to do medicine ?

Congratulations to her! 776 in highers is amazing. I think the IB is a brilliant course, but so tough. (In my younger kids' cohort it has been striking how many parents love the sound of the IB and lots of the kids are (rightly imo) worried about the workload.) Younger DD has chosen it too and I'm full of admiration but also apprehension for her.
I think DD had serious regrets in December/January when medicine interviews and coursework deadlines were all happening at once. But she's loved keeping up with a range of subjects. She's going to Oxford.

Thethingswedoforlove · 07/07/2025 08:51

I’m just so proud as she isn’t naturally soo so good at exams. So it stands out that all her hard work has paid off. Brilliant re your dd going to Oxford. She will be well set up for the rigour of that course by having completed the IB. And for your younger dc I think the journey for you will be a tad easier perhaps if they aren’t doing medicine. Enjoy celebrating!

Congratulations to your DC @Thethingswedoforlove and @maybemedmum! We were in this place last year, DS got his grades and has just finished his first year at uni. He says that everything his teachers said about how he'll find uni easier after the IB (compared to his peers with A levels) turned out to be true!

Thethingswedoforlove · 07/07/2025 09:07

Thank you @YellowGrey that is very reassuring to hear! There need to be some benefits!!!

Thethingswedoforlove · 07/07/2025 09:07

Where is your ds @YellowGrey ? And has he had a fab year ?

OP posts:
YellowGrey · 07/07/2025 18:44

Yes! He's at Durham, he's had a great year.

maybemedmum · 07/07/2025 19:32

That's great to hear @YellowGrey. It's good that it's such great preparation for university. And a long summer with the uncertainty removed is another bonus for the kids who meet their offer (though it must be very difficult indeed for those that don't and have to wait for A Level results to come through too - a couple of DD's friends are in that position and it's horrible for them).

ChateauMargaux · 08/07/2025 12:44

I did see some disappointed chatter on wiwikau but I also looked at the global average - broadly in line with the last two years, slightly higher.. 30.58 versus 30.32...

DD is happy, off to Bristol. In 2022, DS missed his offer by getting 765 instead of 666 - saved by a remark!

It's been a tough road - DS2 is going to year 12 - one more spin around the room!!

Thethingswedoforlove · 08/07/2025 12:56

Brilliant @ChateauMargaux yes I think those disappointed obv going to be more vocal. I can’t believe it is over for me. Supporting through uni is a different experience. All best for your dd as she enters the fray! And for your dd off to Bristol. We have much to be proud of in our dcs. I am most proud of the effort and resilience required to stay the IB course.

Just bumping this one. Based on the DS cohort, it has been a crazy year. Some people were unexpectedly up a few grades, but then many others dropped a few and for some they dropped a lot. Overall, the class has seen grades differing significantly from their predicteds, and in fairness to their school, historically they are usually fairly accurate in predicting the final results so all a bit of a shock.

DS was a point short of his Firm, but they just confirmed they'll still take him, which is a big relief, although he was still OK with his insurance if that's the way it went. When DS spoke to the Uni yesterday, they implied they had quite a few to review, so I do think it's been a strange year. And of course, he has some friends who've been thrown into a complete tailspin.

Thethingswedoforlove · 09/07/2025 02:20

Biology was a new syllabus. That might have been a factor. Wonder if any other subjects changed too?

OP posts:
Thethingswedoforlove · 09/07/2025 02:22

Brilliant your ds got his firm @SilverCoins . I had heard unis are often flex around IB scores as it’s such a tough qualification. Where is he off to?

OP posts:
ChateauMargaux · 09/07/2025 12:10

I wonder how what the variation from predicted is overall... whether it is school dependent .. what variability there is overall at IB level and by subject... what percentage of subjects that are remarked go up and whether this is acceptable.. A new syllabus should not matter.. the assessment should be similar and the bell curve should be similar..
