DS finishes on Friday lunchtime. This week has been a week too long for him, he’s very grumpy!

well done to your DD @Philandbill !

My dsil is on the senior team at Lancaster, they are having to make some cuts, but I don’t think it’s as awful as some unis, certainly she’s encouraging dd to consider it as an option and I’m sure she wouldn’t if there were significant issues with student experience. They are trying to encourage more home UG students to make up for fall in overseas PG, but I think everywhere is. She does think there may be more wiggle room in grade expectations this year, particularly for 1st choice places. Dd is predicted AAB and she’s encouraging her to look at some higher tariff options.

Thank you @wonderstuffthat’s really good to know.

Waspie · 16/07/2025 08:05

Well done to your daughter @Philandbill, that’s an excellent result!

Lalux · 18/07/2025 16:27

Y12 done and we finally have PGs which DS over the moon with but also he’s been very consistent and has been predicted as hoped for 3 A Stars.

Wishing all a lovely holiday ahead.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/07/2025 17:34

Fabulous @Lalux, very well done to your ds

We have to wait until September for predicted grades as AS results will play a big part. DS has found out which teacher will be writing his UCAS reference this week and he’s pleased so that’s good.

Waspie · 18/07/2025 18:09

Predicted grades worth waiting for! Well done to your son @Lalux

bluefineliner · 19/07/2025 08:04

@Lalux well done to your DS on the PG!

Well DD has returned from her school trip to Paris having had to endure a return coach journey with delays taking 18 hours in total! I picked her up at 4.30am so we were all a bit jaded yesterday. She had a great time and met some new people who she hadn't had opportunity to talk to at school before which was great. DD moved to a new 6th form and found it hard to get to know any others apart from those in her subject classes so this trip was great for her ahead of y13.

After catching up on sleep she is now going to have to start UCAT prep but seems to be taking it in her stride atm. I tried to do some research to allow for plan b, c and d if UCAT doesn't go well but I just went round in circles and concluded we can't make any plans at all until she's got the result.

I am not good at 'wait and see' but am trying my best to hide it and appear chilled about it all in front of DD 😂.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/07/2025 08:32

Great PGs @lalux, well done to your DS!

That's a long journey @bluefineliner DS's trip is going to be a little longer than that both ways, just found out last week they are not flying direct. Nightmare! Glad she got to make friends with some new people, it's not easy being the newbie.

WoodlandFlowers · 19/07/2025 09:28

We’ve just got dd’s predicted grades as well. Thrilled that they are above what she needs for her number 1 choice. She is now not sure whether to even go to any more open days

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/07/2025 09:50

Great news @WoodlandFlowers . What does she want to do and where have her pg opened up as possibilities?

gingercat02 · 19/07/2025 09:59

Can't quite believe we are halfway through A levels. DS finished yesterday and hit holiday mode straight away. Tennis in the afternoon, Nandos and then a party at a friend's.
He was still talking to someone when I woke up at 3am!
Apparently he has loads of work for the hols, so we need a chat about that at some point but he needs a chill out first.
Well done to DC and us for making it through Y12.

SilverBlue56 · 19/07/2025 10:16

Mine climbed Poon Hill at 4:30am Nepali time for the sunrise and has finished day 3 of the.5 day trek after that.

He's been away for 11 days and I haven't heard from him once, I only know what's going on from other parents 😫

I will be relieved when they are out of the mountains and back in the city, and even more relieved when he's on the plane home.

I am enjoying the lack of cooking, nagging and being woken up by him crashing about too late / too early though 😁

GreatGranPam · 19/07/2025 12:51

Dd is in a similar position as a pp now she has her predicted grades. She wants to do engineering and loves Nottingham, The open day was great and we can’t see a single negative. They ask for A A A and say that they offer to everyone predicted that. And as long as she gets an A in maths, they will likely accept her. Dd has been predicted A star in maths and A A in her other subjects. Not really sure what else to look at now though. She has always thought that Newcastle will be her insurance at BBC. It all seems a bit too simple!

Newlease · 23/07/2025 22:54

Great end of year 12 for us too, got email from teacher about Pg moved up as it was on the boarder, now to keep up with predictions!
Which also means we will be continuing with 4 subjects. All these made me start thinking of DS’s GCSE choices( End of Y7 email says they need to choose next yr), thanks to this thread. As you say, time flies and Year 12ended with last day at Airshow.
prepping for ESAT now, coming to reality of topics to be covered, holiday and then only three more weeks left to start year 13. Only just settling into week 1.
I wonder if it’s only me but I felt like my school years felt like eternity( boarding schools, never allows to go until end of terms-always wanted to go to grandmas).
We haven’t checked out any other uni’s after Bristol, ICL and Southampton. Focus will need to be on tests now, I guess.
Anyone else on uni thread on FB suggested by MN. People worrying about results/accommodation and all sort of stuff 😭
we will be soon there, should enjoy this year properly. Enjoy summer everyone

Lalux · 24/07/2025 08:05

@Newlease that’s great news and good luck with the ESAT prep.

@SilverBlue56 when is your DS back? Hope he’s had the most amazing time.

He's back late tomorrow evening, cannot wait for him to be safely on the plane now, I've had enough worry. I've taken up colouring to try and calm myself down in the evenings and it's not working but I have got some nice pens 🤣

Curlyshabtree · 24/07/2025 09:10

My DD just got back from 2.5 weeks in Asia on a biodiversity trip with school. Completely off grid for some of it and no contact for over a week. I think it was good for both of us. It made me think about when I went travelling in the 80s and 90s and how difficult it was to keep in touch.
She had a great time but is glad to be home!
She’s now buckling down for the UCAT…..
DS has some work experience with a law firm coming up.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/07/2025 08:15

DS has just headed off for the states, I’m just hoping he’s going to get through customs without trauma! 😬

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/07/2025 13:41

Hope it all goes smoothly and he has an amazing time @JustHereWithMyPopcorn . DS’ girlfriend is at a Yale summer school atm and loving it! He’s very jealous!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/07/2025 17:22

Ooh what a fabulous opportunity @Muchtoomuchtodo I’m not surprised he’s jealous!

bibliomania · 28/07/2025 09:08

DD went off to her 2-week financial services internship with 5 cereal bars and a copy of the Communist Manifesto. I love 17-year-olds.

gluenotsoup · 28/07/2025 15:41

Hi
Just delurking to ask about predicted grades.
Has anyone’s dc not actually got clear predictions yet?
dd has had her end of y12 report today, and there are no predictions that I can see. Only minimum expected grade, or grades from the June mocks. She got 2 B’s and distinction star, but ideally needs 2A’s and the distinction star to apply where she wants to secure an offer.
What are her likely predictions …? She has had A’s in the past and also not yet done the course work.
I don’t like not knowing the clear details 😂

The school might just call them expected grades but it might be her predictions as well. Some schools say targets etc but it's all the same thing. When she gets back to school, she can ask her teachers. She still has time till UCAS deadline (near end of January), but some schools might impose their own deadline of December so they can get all the applications done. So does she have mocks in the autumn that may impact her grade?
Also teachers will want consist A's not just getting them on one or 2 essays. Especially they will want consistency A's for all essays etc - if you get an A on on 25 marker but the rest are a mix of C's and B's then unlikely to predict. Because mocks you tend to do more papers and a a range if questions. Also depending on the coursework percentage of the grade, they won't want to inflate it too much. Coursework is normally only 20% of overall grade (thinking English, History etc). If its more then they'll take it into consideration

wonderstuff · 28/07/2025 16:01

Dd has predicted grades, but she’s querying one, she has achieved A grades in economics but got a B prediction, whereas she’s got strong Bs in psychology and has an A prediction. It doesn’t seem to make sense, there’s plenty of time to straighten it out though I think.

Her minimum expected grades are BBB, she currently has predictions of ABB, but we think that will change to AAB, however she thinks she’ll probably end up with ABC or AAC (with the grade that’s predicted A being the one that might be A or B, one predicted B likely to be an A and the other predicted B likely to be a C). It’s so confusing knowing where to apply!
