Anyone dealing with GCSE resits?

TeenToTwenties · 12/04/2025 08:01

I don't know anyone in real life whose DC have had to resit at all, let alone this year.

DD, 20, is sitting maths again. To be fair, she has only had 1 good attempt so far, 2 years ago, and didn't have the stamina to go more than an hour in each exam so it was never going to go well.

We gave up with English Lang and she passed Functional Skills last summer instead.

Trying to get all open assignments for main course done this holidays to clear the decks for May.

Just me then. Smile

Good luck to her! (And you!) Well done on the English, that's fab and hard fought-for!

Is there another resit opportunity in hand or is this the final push?

TeenToTwenties · 17/04/2025 10:58

This will be the last attempt at GCSE.

I am looking into rolling straight into Functional Skills whilst she is still up to speed rather than letting her forget everything for 2.5 months and then picking up again in September. I will ask tutor how long to convert to the new paper style, and have to find an exam centre to sit in person as she won't get on with online.

From September she will either be working, or more likely doing a Supported Internship, but with that they don't work towards a maths qualification.

And learning to drive if at all possible will take priority, as for some reason kennels are always in the middle of nowhere....

I just want to say ‘solidarity’ - it is hard when they struggle academically - and good luck to your DD.

Thank you. When she last sat it 2 years ago she only had the stamina to stay in an exam for 1hr, so that was never going to go well. She is so much better on the stamina now, but has little confidence in herself.

Sending positive vibes @TeenToTwenties

Candleabra · 15/05/2025 06:53

Good luck to your daughter

CobblesBeach · 15/05/2025 08:38

My daughter is just sitting here A levels, during her time in sixth form she has retaken her GCSE Maths 4 additional times, even with a Maths tutor she missed about on average by around 6-9 marks.

It was going to jeopardise her Uni offers so finally persuaded the school to let her take Functional skills Maths and she passed first time and Uni has accepted this result.

It’s a battle for kids and I feel your struggle. I will be going through it again next year with my son to enable him to get a plumbing apprenticeship good luck to your daughter x

hellsbells99 · 15/05/2025 08:57

Good luck to your DD 🤞🏼

TeenToTwenties · 15/05/2025 11:58

1 exam done. Stayed in for 90mins+. Attempted all questions.
Improvement on last attempt 2 years ago anyway. Smile

Fingers crossed for her. It shouldn’t be this hard for them the system needs a complete change

Sending you all the good vibes I can. Exams are hard on parents- all we can do is watch and wait, we can’t actually do it for them…

Candleabra · 15/05/2025 17:05

Sounds like a great start. Good luck for the next two exams

Edinaandpatsyrule · 27/05/2025 15:04

Keeping everything crossed for her! I know the feeling. My DS struggled with gcse English but did get a 4 on his second attempt. I was so so chuffed for him as it was so hard fought. I also bought his English teacher flowers because she absolutely kept the faith he could do it and was phenomenal throughout. Best of luck to her: these are much harder battles than those for whom results come easily and should be just as celebrated.

TeenToTwenties · 11/06/2025 12:33

Well that's done. 3rd paper seems to have gone less well, I think she lost her mojo. Can ignore it now until results day which I have just checked and is 21st August.
Regardless of result we aren't doing this again.

Bless you. I feel your pain. My DD did her GCSEs last year and unfortunately didn’t pass Maths or English language. Managed to pass Maths in the November resits, but has just done English for a third time. Fingers crossed.

Let's hope she has done enough to get to that 4. Wishing you the best of luck.

Has she looked at Function Skills Maths too as a possibility.

We've looked but not tried it. It is more wordy which is less good for dyslexia.
But she's had it. She's 20. I'm not going to push more for maths, and if she needs it for work she can come back to it if need be.

@TeenToTwenties good luck to her, crossing fingers for good result. Do let us know if it’s good news come August?!

perpetualplatespinning · 11/06/2025 14:49

@TeenToTwenties I hope it is good news in August.

If DD doesn’t get a 4 this time and wants/needs to come back to maths in the future, it might be worth looking at Edexcel’s awards in mathematics. Level 2 is split into 2 separate awards - number & measure or algebra, you don’t have to sit both. I haven’t looked at the papers in detail, so I don’t know how they compare to FS, but I know they work better for some.

TeenToTwenties · 11/06/2025 14:54

@perpetualplatespinning Not heard of those, thank you.
