Apprenticeships 2025

My son is doing A-levels.this year and doesn't want to go to uni..He doesn't really know what he wants to do, however, he has had a good look at all the apprenticeships that were recently advertised and has applied for two. One level 4 at the council and a level 5 engineering position at a multi national company who have a site near us. So far he has had online tests for the company and an in person interview and presentation and now has to go to an assessment day. He's not heard from the council yet. I'm really surprised about the process and how intense it seems to be..just wondering if anyone else's kids are at the midst of it..Any tips.or hints? Anyone know if there will be more apprentice adverts coming or are they mostly done now for the September start?

This is a useful resource: https://www.ucas.com/apprenticeships There are fewer Apprenticeships than young people wanting to do them so they are competitive! Well done your son for getting to the assessment centre stage.

My advice is to keep looking. Be proactive and don’t wait for them to be advertised.

Look at company websites as quite often they’re only advertised there. Also, look at a wide range of companies. For example, a friend is doing HR with British Airways (I think), so not the obvious core business.

Hi my dd felt the same ….just apply for everything whether you think some may not be your ideal job. To be honest it is a bit of luck and lots of practise…so when you do find the job you really want it won’t be your first time being interviewed.

Good luck- my dd now has an apprenticeship for September . Also I think there are some apprenticeships in the Indeed website.

@Sallyingon. They are a job and they are spending money training DC. They might have shed loads of applicants and want the best they can get. So it’s tough! He should be asking if either apprenticeship would go to degree level. In engineering a MEng is the best qualification. He might find promotion limited without at least a BEng level 6 qualification. Could he do an engineering degree?

Transport for London offer apprenticeships in lots of things from marketing to engineering. Look on their careers website.

Offering isn’t the same as actually getting. What if you don’t live in London?

Well obviously you apply and see if you get an interview. And not all TfL jobs are based in London. Also, people commute.

Depends where OP lives surely? The universities and colleges have contacts offering apprenticeships. The NHs has lots. The government has a web site for them and recruitment platforms like Indeed or Total jobs. Also look at the biggest employers in your area. Google is your friend.
