Lesson cancellations - how does your sixth form record attendance?

If a sixth-form teacher cancels a lesson (with or without cover work supplied, but no cover teacher) are students at your school automatically recorded as "present" or "authorised absence" or something else?

Ours have to go to a hub, report there, and then they are given their attendance mark. (I think). Agricultural college.

At our school, if a teacher of a sixth form lesson will be missing that lesson for any reason (including because they are off unwell), they need to make sure the class knows to register with someone else. (Lower school classes are assigned a cover teacher through the cover system but sixth form aren’t.) I would message a member of my department and tell my class to sign in with Mr X before getting on with the work I’ve set. Any unregistered class gets followed up on by the powers that be so we have to be on top of it.

The legal register is first thing in the morning and lesson after lunch. Each is a half day session. Most schools/colleges require students to tap in and out of site anyway. Not sure how it works legally when students are off site for free periods.

Not everywhere registers every lesson and sixth form lessons haven't been covered anywhere I've worked.

My dd will receive an email telling her what to do:

Some departments require her to attend the usual room and another teacher from that department will come and quickly register them and then it’s down to the students to stay/do work

Others just send work to be done anywhere - they don’t require any confirmation of attendance so don’t know what they do re register.

Some just literally say use time to revise. Again, presumably they mark everyone present.

dd gets a lot of covers!

They go to the the sixth from office and another member of staff records them as present for the lesson.
it's sometimes possible to get a friend to register you while you stay in bed

I don't think the registering at the beginning of morning and afternoon sessions works in a sixth form where you might easily have no lessons for one session, let alone one at the beginning of the session. Unless you go to a sixth form that insists on mandatory attendance on site all day, I guess.

At my school we don't usually cover sixth form and it would be recorded as X which is what we use when they don't have a lesson.

AwfulAmount · 29/11/2024 07:43

That's what mine is. An X if the lesson was cancelled and they couldn't attend because there was no lesson to attend.

And if there is a teams lesson they are either present or absent as normal.

Harrumphhhh · 29/11/2024 07:43

At our school, sixth formers go to the sixth form office to sign in and pick up the work for the lesson. They would then be recorded as present, even if they chose to go home to complete it.

Does code X negatively impact the student's attendance record?

No, it's not a present/absent code, it takes that lesson off the record. It means 'not required to attend'.

AwfulAmount · 29/11/2024 17:04

Here’s two screenshots of my DD’s attendance record. One showing the x marks and one where it shows what the x means. ‘Lesson not held’.

You can see from the percentages at the side that it doesn’t affect the attendance.
