Psychology?

DD wanting to study Psychology and is having trouble whittling down 5 choices. Predictions are A, A, B (Psychology, English, Biology). She loved Bath but they are asking for A*AA. Are Exeter and Durham good as we like the campus feel. I think it boils down to her wanting to be on a campus in a safe city.
It would be great to hear of anyone who has a DC who is studying Psychology and to see if they are enjoying their course/ uni

DD’s friend did psych at Brum which is a great uni and a nice campus. Big city tho so may not suit.

Nice campuses with smaller cities or towns might include Lancaster, Loughborough, Warwick? No idea if they do psych tho

My DD is in her final year studying Psychology at University of Liverpool. She is loving it - says that this year, although hard, has really great content in her modules and is finding it so interesting.

Her A-levels were English Language, Psychology and Drama.

Liverpool is a great city for students.

I meant to say @wondabar what do you or your dd mean by a safe city? There is crime in every city but in general I am not aware of city x being worse than city y.

Or do you mean a small city? In which case Durham, Exeter, Bath (worth a punt if she is only one grade off on PGs?) Canterbury, Norwich, Southampton?

wondabar · 12/11/2024 13:55

@clary Yes, that is what I mean - a smaller city where DD won't feel too lost

@wondabar I think you will find students do tend to stick to student areas. Other than maybe London. So I really would not worry about size. DH was at Sheffield but didn’t go all over the city as there was no need. Most students find friends and have favourite haunts. So I would not discount anywhere really.

I know psychology grads from Liverpool, Surrey and Nottingham. All liked their courses but none are psychologists! If she actually wants this as a career, try and investigate how many become psychologists. It could be very few.

I would also say small doesn’t necessarily mean safe. Safety is also about having common sense and making reliable friends.

DD read Psychology at York and loved it.

Yes agree with this. London has always felt perfectly safe to me as long as you are sensible.

It can be the people students think they know where danger lies. Not so much street violence which is rare. However having good antennae, always staying in a small group and being careful with belongings and staying vigilant do help with the transition to uni.

Warwick or st Andrew's both safe and small

DD is loving it. One thing I’d flag is that there is a fair bit of stats and coding involved (the amount may vary by uni)- worth looking into whether this fits with what your DD wants to do.
