London Unis for Psychology (that take BTECs)

Yes, I know we're hopelessly disorganised. DD18 is currently in her second year of a BTEC in psychology & Forensics. Predicted good grades, D,D,D*. Her preference is to get a job/apprenticeship in the field but I know that will be very difficult so plan B is to go to Uni. However, she doesn't want to move away (she wouldn't cope for various reasons) so we're limited to commutable ones which is London in our case.

I know we should be going to open days and are being incredibly lazy but I don't know where to start and DD is hardly motivated so I wondered if anyone had any pointers for unis that could fit the bill. Google hasn't got me too far as yet but I'm persevering.....

The UCAS website has a search tool.
digital.ucas.com/coursedisplay/results/courses?searchTerm=Psychology&studyYear=2025&destination=Undergraduate&regions=Greater%20London&postcodeDistanceSystem=imperial&pageNumber=1&sort=MostRelevant&clearingPreference=None

For each university, you will see an orange circle with either a value in it or 'n/a'. Click on the circle and you will have the option of changing to the type of post-16 qualification you want to know about. For example.g. City, the tariff point value value is 136 UCAS tariff points, but changing to BTEC shows DDD. If ypu click further on the university it will take you to the course pages and you can see what the full requirements are.

@Geminijust Dont the clinical associate in psychology apprenticeships require a degree in psychology? They are level 7 masters. Is this what she’s looking at? What would the apprenticeship be for an 18 year old? Degree holders find becoming a psychologist very competitive.

She was more looking at the police on the forensics side, such as fingerprinting, but I don't think they come up very often.

@Geminijust

This would probably be of interest to her at some point:

@TheSquareMile thank you, she did mention sandwich courses, so definitely the kind of thing!

I'm not sure a degree in psychology would help her get a job doing fingerprinting.

Ellmau · 09/10/2024 00:27

The opportunity n @The SquareMile's link wants applicants to be doing a science related degree.

Maybe something like this course with a foundation year would work for her? Forensic Science (including foundation year) at London Metropolitan University - UCAS

The first one I googled was Kings. There's plain Psych, or Psych and Crim BSc that only needs DDM.

Foundation year is well worth a look if she might struggle with the transition. Apparently students who've done a foundation year get higher grades on average than those who don't. Considering they will usually be the ones who come in with lower qualifications or social struggles, I think that is really impressive.

KCL

Psychology and Criminology

This new BPS-accredited degree will give you a strong foundation in psychology and teach you how to understand crime, criminal behaviour and the justice system.
