Psychology A level with 6 in English GCSE

Does anybody know if a 6 in GCSE English will lead to a poor outcome in A level psychology? (9 biology, 8 maths and 8/9 in everything else)

I appreciate it’s quite a blunt question! I suppose I’d like to know what the most likely outcome will be.

I can only give you my experience of almost 30 years ago. A ‘b’ in English language gcse and an A (the top grade, no A*s then) in Psych A level. I can’t see why it would hold her back

I think the ability to write essays is inportabt, but she clearly has that. If she is keen the grade really should not put her off

My DD had a 6 in English Language GCSE and is going into year 13 doing psychology level and likely to be predicted an A or A star based on AS level of an A ( we are in Wales). She struggled with the creative aspect of English under timed conditions and really enjoys psychology, it’s her favourite subject.

DC got an (unexpected) 6 in English Lang- 8s and 9s for everything else. Predicted an A* for Psychology A level. English GCSE results have been all over the place the last couple of years so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

DD did psychology at Alevel and it was a lot more sciency than I would have thought. She said that her Maths came in handy too due to needing to look at statistics and work things out.
Being able to write an essay is good too.
DS also wants to do psychology and he will probably get a 6 or 7 in English and higher in Sciences/Computing

This all sounds very encouraging, thanks all.

My DD is in y13 doing Psychology and she says it includes a fair bit of science (structure of the brain, some biochemistry etc.) and GCSE level maths (graphs and statistical methods mainly). The college requirements were Maths and Eng Lan grade 4 and a Science grade 5 which I guess reflects this. She says there's a lot of content and studies to remember, a bit like history really so yes, I think your DC should be fine.

elozabet · 04/09/2024 18:23

She'll be fine. If she's got 8 and 9's in everything else, would be expecting a good grade in psych.

I'm assuming the English grade was a bit of a blip?

Featherrrr · 04/09/2024 18:26

She's clearly very bright with 8s and 9s in everything else. She will be fine. Was it both English Literature and Language she got a 6 in?

newmum1976 · 04/09/2024 18:40

She hated everything about her English lessons; teacher, books, poems etc and therefore did no work for it. Her work ethic was very good for everything else, hence the high grades.

I'd think she should be fine with the maths and science grades, good luck to her.

wonderstuff · 04/09/2024 18:45

My dd also about to start psychology with only a 5 in Eng, but 7&8 in all her science and maths GCSEs. I’ve done a degree in psychology and I think she’ll be fine, it’s definitely a subject much closer to science than English and the GCSE English curriculum is just dire in my opinion.

Rory17384949 · 04/09/2024 19:30

I doubt it would hold her back, the type of essays needed for psychology will be factual which is quite a different style of writing than that needed for English gcse
