Questions about university (Bath) - laptop, microsoft etc (possibly silly!)

Hello,

We have just bought DS a laptop to go to university with (if relevant it's Bath University).

How does it work, when you go to university with them giving you a microsoft account (or ID? or access to Excel/Word etc?). He's signed into his own personal microsoft account on the new laptop. Can you sign into an additional microsoft account if the university give you one, in order to access their licences for word/excel? Or do you buy your own access to word/excel on a student rate?

(DS didn't use a laptop or word or excel at school and has ASD so hence me trying to help him get set up)

Thank you

I am basing this on when my two started at Uni but it was 4 or 5 years ago so things may have changed. You will probably need your own versions of Microsoft office or (Word, Excel etc), but these may be pre-loaded onto the laptop for an extra cost, or you can buy them independently probably with a student discount. My two had Macs and there were quite big savings to be made on the cost of the laptops and the Mac compatible Microsoft Office suite, as they were potential students.
Once they get there, they will get a login for the Uni 'website' which is where all the information they need about the course, lecture notes/recordings, reading lists etc can be accessed and they have to upload their work to the site.

Can the Uni help at all? A quick google has given this https://www.bath.ac.uk/professional-services/disability-service/Disability Service
or you could start with the Student Support Services.

Edited for typos

Disability Service

The Disability Service can provide advice and support for applicants and current students and information to staff.

Thanks very much - he’s registered with disability services but I didn’t realise there was a specific ASD bit of the website.

My understanding is, If you're in full time education you get access to the Microsoft office suite through that.

You need an email address registered at one of the school or university domains.

My daughter is at Leeds Uni and logs in through her Uni account. We don't buy office licences separately

DD had a uni account at Newcastle as well.

I think all universities do this.

I’m a lecturer and our students access Microsoft through us, no need to pay for it. They log in with academic email which gives them multiple apps, including our virtual learning environment. There will be an induction in his first week where they will cover all these fiddly bits so the students are up and running when lectures start. Good luck to him 😊

The university might have Office 365 which gives access to online versions of Word etc. But that doesn't have the full functionality of the desktop versions so it's better to have them on the laptop too. Also means you can work without being connected to the internet.

Information should be on the student webpages of the university's website. A PP has posted a link.
