Please can someone advise if there is any point in myself and DH filling in the Student Finance forms if our joint income is over £58307? (its more like £100k)
We are happy to fill them in but if its just going to come back with a no is there any need?
Thank You

Every student gets the minimum maintenance amount, so yes, unless you’re happy to cover all of the costs of course.

sunflowerfan · 15/05/2024 12:03

I think once the student enters a figure for parents income if it's over the threshold they don't ask for any further info.

sunflowerfan · 15/05/2024 12:04

We only sent a info once when we dropped below the threshold one year.

Hoppinggreen · 15/05/2024 12:10

Well as we earn a certain amount it seems that DD will only get the minimum amount (around 5k plus tuition) so we will have no choice but to cover her costs apart from that.
My question is do we fill in the forms to only be told she wont get any more due to income or is there another reason for the form?

She filled it and and now me and DH have had emails asking us to either input income info or say we dont support her application.
I am not sure if we need to as she wont qualify for more than the minimum, although she may get some due to her MH which she has supporting evidence for

Yes, your child will still get the minimum maintenance loan.

No she can just tick the box saying she is applying for minimum loan amount to get the lower maintenance amount. Then they don't ask you anything.

Hoppinggreen · 15/05/2024 12:13

"By continuing, you will be given the option to provide your income details or decline the student’s request to support their application. If you choose to decline, XXXXX can still get the minimum amount of student finance"

This suggests there is no need for us to do it

DC applied for the minimum so no need for us to fill in income details. Can your DD change her application to just apply for minimum? Otherwise decline if she will still get min loan and fees paid.

sunflowerfan · 15/05/2024 12:18

Has she entered a figure for parental income above the threshold for anything more than minimum maintenance loan?
If so I'm surprised you were asked for anything 🤷‍♀️.
Because she will only get the minimum which everyone can get irrespective of income.
Unless things have changed this year?

Hoppinggreen · 15/05/2024 12:20

I think its because she ticked a box by mistake as I told her she would only get the minimum.
I think we will both just decline.
Thanks everyone

Sorry, I thought you meant was it worth applying at all.

So yes, just apply for the minimum because based on your income, your child will only get that. No need to fill in more information for a full household income assessment as you know you’re above the threshold.

This - all of ours were told by us that we knew that they would only be eligible for the minimum loan, but good old Middle Child thought she'd tick the 'I want to borrow as much as I can' box anyway, bless her, so we got the emails. Very helpful SFE person said to just ignore them and after a fairly short time, DD would just be assessed for eligibility for the tuition fee loan and minimum maintenance loan, which she duly was.

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2024 08:46

Thank you
We may just ignore the email, I ahve asked her if she can go back and tick the other box but she says not.
It just feels a bit mean to tick a box saying we dont support her application, especially since we are going to be giving her a shit load of money

Hi, I just searched "student finance" as I am in the same boat, I found your thread! I also applied for DD this week. It came back through today, to her online SFE account saying she qualifies and her loan amount will be £5146 per year and I wondered if anyone knows if that is the standard? We did both do supporting applications for her. I thought we didn't earn a lot as we have a Ltd company and the PAYE is the lowest it can be, but then I thought actually HMRC probably shared all the dividends with them too!! Argh! How the hell are we going to afford the £9k per year accommodation?!!

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2024 17:37

We are SE too and it goes on last years Return not the PAYE unfortunately.
According to the online calculator I think thats what DD will get too

@RunnerOnTheRun minimum is 4767 if you are not living a home and not studying in London so your dd has been awarded above the minimum

RunnerOnTheRun · 16/05/2024 17:58

Thank you! We are "employed" by the Ltd company but do submit self assessments. Yes staying away from home out of London but not very far out, not sure if that makes a difference.

I guess I need a second job!!
