My daughter needs to firm her uni choice very soon and is changing her mind daily. Does anyone have any knowledge as to why one might be better/nicer/different than the other, please. All opinions considered. Thank you

DC is doing Econ at Exeter. The teaching is rigorous - about 20hrs F2F a week plus seminars and the same private study on top. It has an award winning business school and they really seem to be prepping the students for a career, not just a degree.
DC is extremely happy there. The pastoral care is top notch and socially, activities seem to centre around sport, the local pubs and couple of nightclubs. The beach is 20 mins away by train and events like BBQ's and society nights happen on the green spaces of the campus.

Downsides - expensive rent, though there's not much difference between Bristol and Exeter in terms of cost (£750 plus bills) is average for a room in shared house.
It is obviously much smaller so if youre after a buzzing nightlife, its probably not for you!

Exeter is much smaller in more ways than night life. DD liked art exhibitions, theatre, music venues and ease of getting to see friends via rail when at Bristol. It’s bigger and less cut off and has much more on offer outside lolling around on lawns. Which is also possible!

In the first instance what's the course ranking? If similar then go Exeter, better in many ways than Bristol who have a terrible reputation for student care.

Thing is, it very much depends on the student. I’ve had 2 dc go to Bristol uni (1 there now) and they’ve both loved it and had/are having a great time there. Bristol has a ‘buzz’ that Exeter doesn’t have, and if that’s what they want, it’s a great place to be. It’s a bit like London, without having to be in the huge London sprawl. If they’re not likely to enjoy city life, then maybe Bristol’s not for them.

Dd has firmed Bristol as her first choice (got a place at Exeter too) simply as she knows so many people there having a fantastic time including her db! She is a bit of a party girl and coming from a “naice” town in the north-west wants a proper uni experience- I think she was worried Exeter would be a bit boring and small (ruled out Durham for the same reasons).

She is going to be doing geography and seems to think Bristol is better regarded (they also wanted higher grades). I am slightly concerned about the housing situation but we’ll worry about that later!

I could almost have written this myself the worldie! DD has discounted Durham and Exeter likewise, we attend Bristol open day next weekend but it's already her favourite. Looking at Geography too and can't wait to go. Did your DD consider year abroad or know anyone who has? Have heard such positive things and really wondering whether to encourage DD to consider. Worried too that in choosing year abroad we may have a smaller pot and therefore higher chance of no offer. Would love your DD experience thus far!!
