DD in Y12 doing Geography, English Lit and French. I was wondering if you could give me a selection of possible Uni course she could do moving forward. Thanks.

Literally my DD's A levels! She considered classical civ but in the end went for English lit, always her passion.

So any of those subjects at uni would be great; or then subjects that don't need specific A levels such as business/marketing, philosophy, psychology (tho lack of science might be an issue, not sure), sociology, social policy, or any of those with French, or something leaning more towards the geography/town planning type area?

What does she enjoy? She could take French and then add another language ab initio. What PGs as well?

Law with French
International Relations with French
Environmental Science

I would do Geography. I think that with climate change and with companies now really beginning to look at sustainability it would make you the most employable afterwards.

Geography is a great university subject. It is so wide ranging it accommodates many different interests

Thank you so much for your answers. What would be good universities to look into in England? She will probably achieve AAB but will not want a crazily academic competitive environment.

Other options might be: another language, anthropology, archaeology or Liberal Arts courses. Have you looked at the Russell Group informed choices site? That will give some ideas (but as said ad nauseam on here, don't fixate on RG). AAB will give you access to less competitive courses at high ranked uni's - so not Economics, Computer Science, etc and not Oxbridge.

DS does Geography at Uni of Notts with AAB. Just coming to the end and has really enjoyed it.
Now looking at urban/transport planning or project management. There seem to be lots of options.

What uni - well it depends and there are lots of factors.

With AAB she could get on to a less popular course at a reasonably well-rated uni - so maybe not Eng lit at Warwick but maybe at Birmingham or Newcastle? She should cross off Oxford, Cambridge, probably Imperial, LSE and UCL. But there will be courses even at Bristol and Durham that ask for AAB. MFL especially I suspect.

Does she want a campus uni with everything on site (Nottingham, Loughborough, Birmingham, Warwick, Lancaster) or more city-based one (Sheffield, Leeds, Leicester (tho it has a campus with halls and a separate campus with uni buildings), Bristol?

Does she want a big city (Manchester, Leeds, Brum) or a smaller place (Warwick, Lboro, Canterbury, Durham)?

Does she want to be near home or further afield?

Is cost an issue? If so accommodation (broadly speaking) is cheaper in the north than in the south (with some exceptions) - so a house share in Leeds is cheaper than one in Bristol.

I think the key is to consider what courses she would enjoy, then consider some of the factors above (and any others than may be relevant - close to sea? in countryside?) and then look at where her AAB might get her. Open days this summer are a good idea.

Newcastle, Sussex, Notts, Cardiff, Glasgow, Lancaster, Liverpool, Birmingham, maybe Exeter, probably Leeds and Manchester for some courses.
Liberal arts would be a nice course but any combination of those a level subjects would be solid. A politics based course is also a good shout - IR with French perhaps

converseandjeans · 10/03/2024 12:01

Lots of unis will accept B grade in MFL as it's harder to get an A grade.

Less students going on to do MFL so it's less competitive.

I do agree that lots of focus on the environment and green energy would make geography a good choice.

Look on prospects website for where each subject can lead. There are also sections on this on bbc bitesize careers.

ALunchbox · 10/03/2024 12:32

Is she passionate about any in subject particular?

Spirallingdownwards · 10/03/2024 12:36

Without knowing her background AAB is often a contextual offer for unis that require AAA or AAA or am offer that such courses may from to AAB with an A/A at EPQ too if she is doing one.

TheCodingClubClub · 10/03/2024 14:49

Not doing an EPQ

AAB are good predicted grades for those subjects (universities tend not to require reams of A stars like they do for STEM subjects).

DD has applied for English Literature. She also considered English Lit with Drama/Creative Writing/history. It was only the real top tier universities (Oxbridge/Durham/York) that wanted AAA or any A stars so your DD will have plenty of options.
