College after home education

Any stories / tips / advice from others who have returned to formal education?

My son's been accepted on a course which he's VERY excited about. I am hoping the environment (smaller classes / common interests etc) will make life easier than it was at school.

It is a very intensive course however, and will be hard work the first few weeks while getting into the routine, following 3 years of "home ed".

I am so proud, and hugely relieved, but also praying that things go well and that I can relax for the next two years

Very well done to your son!
my DD was home ed from age 7 years, she went to college aged 15 years, 2 days a week. Now at uni.
She settled in well. One thing that surprised her was that at pre-16 and 16-18, she was one of the only motivated students there!
The tutors really loved her quiet enthusiasm and work ethic. She was so used to research etc that she just got on with it. She had access to a one-to-one when needed to support her because of multiple SpLDs.
good luck to your son!

One of mine home ed from y8 and in y11 she did a transfer to college and took her GCSEs. The course was full of kids like her who had struggled at school - hers was MH. All in all it was good. There were a few dramas. I think the college teachers were a bit more laid back than school. Anyway it worked and she got her exam results.
One thing she took from home ed was learning to focus yourself and crack on with it rather than being spoonfed.
She later did an access course then a nursing degree and masters. I think home ed really taught her to use her iniative.
Good luck to your son I hope it goes really well for him and you can relax a bit.
