Uni shopping list

DS is off to uni in a few weeks.
He is in an en suite room with a kitchenette.
What does he need? I’ve got a little list, but what could I have missed?

Necessary:

Bedding -check size of bed in his halls- 2 sets of bed linen
Towels -2 sets
Bath mats (ostensibly to stop him slipping, but in reality to stop him flooding the bathroom 🙄)
Toiletries

I’d suggest at least two each of the following in case he wants a friend round (or hasn’t done the washing up):

Knife, fork, spoon
Plates
Mugs
Glasses

(Try not to get e.g. white plates/glasses from IKEA, as everyone will have the same. We had an old habitat set of plates etc. so used those, but someone on MN suggested picking up plates etc. in a charity shop.)

Chopping board
Sharp knife/knives
Saucepans -perhaps one smaller and one larger suitable for pasta/rice
Frying pan
Oven tray/s
Tea towels

Check to see what is provided in the kitchen.
Some unis provide e.g. kettles, others don’t -although if not provided he may want to wait until he gets to uni, as the flatmates might want to club together and buy kettle/toaster (6 kettles cluttering up the kitchenette in daughter’s first year!).
We were allowed a kettle in our rooms in the 1980s, but that doesn’t seem the norm anymore.

Useful:

Over the door hooks for the bathroom
Cleaning product for the bathroom (uni usually provide kitchen cleaning stuff)
Compact, foldable clothes horse/airer (the tumble driers are usually rubbish and expensive so nothing’s completely dry)
Mattress topper -they’ll provide a mattress protector, but the they aren’t always the most comfortable mattresses
A basic food shop of tea/coffee, milk, bread, tinned good, dry goods etc.

Depending on how organized he is, a small desk whiteboard so he can write down his deadlines and it’s staring him in the face every morning 😉

Georgie8 · 29/08/2023 18:55

Oh yes @Ayrayeaye forgot first aid kit!

Uni supplied a loo brush.

Letstrythisonefornow · 29/08/2023 18:57

Never thought about a mini first aid kit or mattress topper.

Wait until you get there and check the bed for the mattress topper. DD says her bed was better than the one at home!

WIWIKAU on FB has a list of essentials/recommended -useful/extras.

Letstrythisonefornow · 29/08/2023 19:05

I’m not on Facebook, any one willing to screenshot a list for me please?

Towels in my online basket, I have a dinner set that I bought for the caravan, then realised it was unnecessary weight for towing so saved it for this. Bought an over door hook thing for his jackets and dressing gown.

4 shower gels and a pack of anti bac wipes were also added to todays shopping.

Never considered the bath mat to be for flooding over slipping 😂.

He is a very picky eater, ASD, so I will bulk buy the two things he knows are ‘safe’ foods. He is preparing to try more, but probably won’t use the communal kitchen so everything will be hob or microwave. He doesn’t drink hot drinks so kettle/mug not needed.

Im thinking washing tablets over powder and will mention a clothes airer.

I don’t even know if I can do online shopping to top up his snacks and drinks online as I don’t know what access is like.

I want to make sure he has enough toiletries and cleaning stuff so that he doesn’t have to buy as they won’t be up there on his list of priorities, especially with limited funds.

I found this extensive list from a parent on WIWIKAU. You need to consider critically whether each item would apply in your son's case. They have a website you can sign up to alongside facebook and on Mumsnet itself you may find there are more useful posts in 'Higher Education' rather than 'Further Education'.

Blimey, that WIWIKAU is very extensive -more like moving into your first home than halls 😆

Check with the uni re mini-fridges and other large electrical items, as lots won’t allow them in rooms and they do do room checks, they usually say when, but daughter’s friend’s pet rat got discovered during a random check.

Each flat is provided with a hoover, usually a Henry which stinks after a few weeks because someone hoovered up liquid, despite a large notice saying not to 🙄

Re printer, we did get a small one, but apparently they really don’t need them nowadays as work is all done/submitted online. It didn’t come out of its box.

Desk lamps are usually provided but aren’t great, so we did get a really good one.

However, we got a fireproof/water damage bag (Amazon) to keep passport/ EHIC etc. in when not needed, along with certified copies of passport and birth certificate (needed for DBS check if volunteering for certain things), rather than the original.
Photocopies of our household insurance details (they usually do get some coverage via the uni), our family travel insurance info in case they go abroad (household and travel obviously depends on your insurer, but ours covers them in education up to 25 yo), EHIC or whatever the new replacement is.
Also a list of important phone numbers (i.e family, friends, lost bank/credit cards) should their rucksack containing computer, phone get lost/damaged/stolen -they can usually only remember their own phone number 🙄 Hasn’t happened to us 🤞 but it has happened.

P.S. Fireproof/water damage proof bag may seem a little over the top and a bit odd, but after having to fill in a risk assessment form for a school trip to some far flung place (which was then cancelled due to Covid), it seemed rather sensible. It’s inexpensive and would be very useful should there be a fire and the sprinklers come on!

Letstrythisonefornow · 29/08/2023 21:23

He has a fridge in his room, not sure about a lamp so I may email them. I’ll make a note of all important phone numbers laminate it 😊.

Wait until you get there and check the bed for the mattress topper. DD says her bed was better than the one at home!

This
Between them all, my dc have had 10 different beds in halls and in student accommodation, and for only 1 of those 10 beds was a mattress topper requested.

Georgie8 · 29/08/2023 22:37

To be clear, when I say mattress topper, I don’t mean the £££ ones, but a SilentNight one for c£25.
Keep the receipt and if the mattress is fabulous you can get a refund.

Letstrythisonefornow · 29/08/2023 22:41

Can I do things like Asda/Amazon delivery? He’s staying on campus.

OP posts:
Georgie8 · 29/08/2023 23:07

Yes, for Amazon deliveries.

Not sure about supermarket deliveries, although apparently there were a lot of Hello Fresh/Gusto boxes , so I can’t see why not.
Check with the post room when you drop him off.

I bought a shower mat and towels for uni from a charity shop. When I saw the state of them after son had used them, I was glad I did!

The local charity shops are of a similar price of supermarkets. I probably should have kept my eye out earlier to be honest.
