Dd is heading off next week and is sorting her packing. Anyone have a child do this who might have any tips for making it easier?
Have done one emigration and one j1 visa with the other 2 dds but college erasmus is a new one. She's off to Germany for a college year.

Which University is she going to for her year?

Doteycat · 29/08/2023 09:59

Konstanz.

That's a wonderful opportunity, she will have the best time.

I did a semester at a German University, at Heidelberg, but so much has changed.

I see that Konstanz University offers webinars for incoming students.

It's worth checking what the cost of using her current mobile will be when used there.

Re packing, I would try to pack several things which are light but warm, for layering, as it can be very cold. Boots which have a good grip are worth taking, for when it's snowing.

I think you pack for all weathers but maybe buy extras out there! DD went to Switzerland and just took a puffa and long boots for bad weather. An umbrella is useful.

Try and get DD to sign up to any Erasmus events. Some unis do a lot. The uni should also have an Erasmus office for info when she gets there. Studying abroad is a great opportunity and I’m sure she will enjoy it.

Maybe OP is not in the UK, but I thought Erasmus was replaced with Turing Scheme post Brexit?

I might be wrong, often am!

I went on Erasmus to Spain - absolutely loved my year. Fees were not wives and at the time we got a 3k grant from the EU. I did Spanish at university.

I'm not sure I was prepared, just went and had the best time, so sorry to have nothing practical to say but your DD will love it x

gemloving · 02/09/2023 20:44

Fees were waived*

My Dd is just back from Germany, after an Erasmus year. Prepare her for plenty of form filling in! Seems to be a German thing.

Dd was at Bonn uni, really enjoyed her time there.

TizerorFizz · 03/09/2023 05:43

It’s Erasmus for everyone else. Probably shorthand for a year abroad.

BeyondMyWits · 03/09/2023 15:47

Dd just finished hers, it was an ERASMUS year. She is at a Welsh uni (which as far as I'm aware is still part of the UK).

TheSquareMile · 03/09/2023 17:36

My understanding is that there was a winding down period built in to the UK's withdrawal from the ERASMUS scheme as a result of the Brexit vote.

Some existing agreements between some UK universities and universities in the EU were due to expire in the period running from 2020 to 2023, so they were honoured and allowed to continue until they had all lapsed earlier this year.

I think that active UK student engagement in ERASMUS years abroad was due to stop at the end of May 2023, so there will be UK students who have just finished an ERASMUS placement; they won't be replaced by a new cohort in this academic year, though.

Yes. I think that’s right and it’s well documented the Turing funding is insufficient.

We are not in the UK and she is on an EU Erasmus. We are just back, we went with her for the long weekend to get her settled and we had such a good weekend. Got all her bits for her accommodation and had a lovely weekend scoping out everythign with her. Beautiful spot she is in and the Univeristy looks bloody marvellous. Saying goodbye is never easy but what can you do. All part of it.
She had it all sorted in fairness, shes a whizz, Im so bloody proud of her.

So not quite the same as a uk student! Yes. They all seem to enjoy the year abroad. We did nothing for DD. She sorted it too. They are the self starters of the world!!
