Uni advice too late ?

Before I start no one in my family has ever gone to uni before so I'm still learning . Please be kind. I'm a bit out of my depth.

Daughter was predicted average grades. With that she's applied for average non red brick uni .
She's actually achieved a lot better than expected good enough for a Russell group .
Last Thursday was a bit of a shock and blur so she accepted the perfect fine average uni but actually we've had a few comments / advice to say she should apply for better. The course she wants is very popular so not now available for clearing.
What do we do ? Go ahead with the average or see if we can get an offer for next year and defer ? Will unis allow this or will it risk the current offer?
Tia

Well done to your daughter. One thing you can do is go to each of the unis that you would like to go to, and see their 2024 entry criteria- these are already up and a quick google tells me that none of these require Maths A level as compulsory, all of them accept an A in Computer Science as the key thing (if you don't have Maths). Lancaster requires a 6 or above in Maths GCSE, the others a 4. So, although people are right in saying make sure your dd is prepared there is some maths on these courses, it is not (IMO) worth going back and doing Maths A level to get into the three unis you have mentioned (other RG unis do require Maths). She already meets the criteria for those three.

Otherwise, has she visited these other unis? If not, it could be worth her taking the gap year, and then reapplying early next year for 2024 entry after she's visited them and decided which one to do- also there are some subtle differences in modules, plus some do AI as well, others not.

I think she should take her time and find the right uni for her, as a female coming from a first time uni household, she will be a very desirable student, even without those factors she meets the minimum requirements anyway.

Well done her- perhaps think about doing some courses in her gap year relevant to coding/maths/AI whatever catches her fancy, travelling if she can, as well as working. All so exciting!

DS is taking a gap year and applying for 2024. I had a look at clearing on results day and could believe how deflated the grade offers were for some of the RG unis. DS got his predicted grades of BBB, which we were delighted with but due to mitigating circumstances he could have done a lot better.
I spoke to the tutor at school who deals with UCAS and had an interesting conversation. When school received the results there was a fare bit of panic. Many of the students hadn’t hit predicted grades so we’re below the Uni offers. It became apparent the following day that this was universal and the Unis had overinflated offers in response to 2022 overinflated grades so by the time the students went into school most had had their offers confirmed despite lower grades.
The tutor adv my DS to contact unis before applying because he may get unconditional s from unis who requ higher grades.
Also UCAS application is changing.

The OP suggested her dd wanted to go to Nottingham, Liverpool or Lancaster, none of these require A-level Maths but quite a few others do...I would pick one that doesn't but bear in mind she needs to be reasonably strong in Maths or get tutoring once there if she starts to struggle. Might be worth a look at the league tables as well, Lancaster seems to come out best of those three.
