College Enrolment

Probably better placed in education but more traffic here!

DC (16) has offers at 2 different 6th Form Colleges. First choice and the other as back up. Enrolment for 1st choice is on GCSE resilts day. Backup college has a 2 part enrolment, they wanrt learner agreement and photo for ID now and then attend an appointment to complete enrolment the day after results come out.

My question is do we begin the process of enrolment with bavkup college now, as if we get ID etc in late DC may not be abke to complete part 2 of enrolment at the appointment. Can we effectively start enrolment with backuo and then if DC gets 1st choice witdraw from the enrolment process? Im just worrying hopefully needlessly) about getting it wrong and jepodising the places!

Yep, no problem with that. You’d just withdraw from the second one once you have the first choice sorted. Very common.

Good luck to your son with his results!

Thank you. So ok to start enrolment for backup, even if DC needs to sign learn8ng agreements and then withdraw before finalising? I just don't want them to fund themselves in a position of no place!

Ooh I was wondering about this today Op!

Dc first choice has a staggered enrollment: email gcse results, next day formally apply, with 4cdays after that get a tel appointment allocated to confirm if you have a place,

In the meantime choice no 2 has given an enrolement appointment of gcse day in the afternoon, so results permitting dc will have to enroll at chouce 2 while waiting to hear about choice 1.

It's bonkers!

Not really - colleges need to apply for funding and the sooner hey can do this the better. Each one is funded separately and have staff available over the holidays

Some drop out others want places.

No harm in them getting ahead

I work in a college - perfectly normal for students to enrol or do some of the process and then drop out. I’m sure we would prefer it if nobody did that but students are human and it’s absolutely expected. Better to start enrolment at your backup than end up scrambling later.

@LadyHag , yes I agree it's tje different processes of enrolment that are concerning me- if it was on or after results day we would know where we are at. Backup want initial enrolment now and I'm worried DC will get tied into going there,. But PP suggests it's absolutely fine which I know it must be.

It was the idea of the college applying for funding that's bothering me. Was wondering if backup applied it would flag up at 1st Choice but this obviously isn't the case I see (provided we withdraw). Thank you

Yep that's perfectly fine. I work at a college and no learner agreement is legally binding it's probably just a way for them to share the admin out or keep students interested by checking in. As long as you tell them if he decides to go elsewhere that's fine

FlutteryButterfly · 16/08/2023 00:51

Thank you @BMrs 😊

This has been a re early helpful thread so thanks to everyone who has posted on it.

Dc enrolled at 2nd choice on Thursday and has a tel app for enrolement at 1st choice on Tuesday 👍

GertrudeJekyllRose · 25/08/2023 20:28

It's perfectly normal for students to enroll at 2 or 3 colleges/sixth forms. It's helpful if you drop them an email declining the place when you decide which option you're going for so they can offer the place to someone else and not have to contact you to find out why you've not attended.

Don't worry about the funding, that is based on students on-roll during the school census in October.
