Can you change your mind and go into clearing instead?

Can anyone help, as I can’t see to find answers on the UCAS site.

DS is very keen on his first choice university, but is having major doubts about his second choice.

If he doesn’t get the grades for his first choice, can he reject his second choice and go into clearing instead?

thanks

Yes. He can do it himself on UCAS, it's called releasing into clearing. Outlined here: https://www.ucas.com/undergraduate/results-confirmation-and-clearing/what-clearing/declining-your-firm-place

Worth bearing in mind he can phone places he wants to try in clearing first and ask them if they would accept him, if he applied during clearing. Some won't answer, but many will. It means he can hold his offer whilst finding other options.

Also when did he make his choices? If its within the last 14 days, he can call ucas and change his insurance anyway.

Declining your firm place

If you no longer want to go to your firm choice, you can use the ‘Decline your place’ button in your application.

Yes he can. But worth calling the potential uni first.
