Is it worth trying to get teacher to up predicted grade?

DS has been predicted A,A,B for his A’levels. The universities he likes best require A,A,B but it’s a highly competitive course. Would he stand a better chance of being offered a place with predicted grades of A,A,A or do you think he’ll still be in with a decent chance with the required predicted grades and a strong personal statement?

DDs school would only raise predicted grades if they had evidence from recent internal exams. Seems personal statement is really important, based on offers coming through for DDs friends.

Do any of his choices offer ‘access schemes’ based on postcode or whether parents went to Uni etc.

No I’m fairly sure DS wouldn’t fit the criteria for an access scheme.

Why on earth would the subject teacher agree to say something they didn't believe? A forecast is just that; they honestly think, in their professional judgement, he will attain a B. What makes you think he can do better than they do?

If their forecasting is inaccurate, they have explaining to do to SLT and universities still only take entrants on the strength of their actual qualifications.

How exactly are you planning to persuade them, anyway? Demanding they re-administer mocks? Adopting sadface? Thumbscrews?

What would the point be? Say grades are upped to AAA and he received offers at AAA, accepts offer, sits exams, achieves AAB, and uni does not offer him a place?

Costedelila · 06/11/2022 14:29

@Curta He got a B for his year 12 end of year exam and was 3 marks off an A on a recent exam so it doesn’t seem too unrealistic with hard work. I am aware the teacher knows best though.

I asked DD’s school to do this and they did straight away. Think they predicted her BBC and she wanted to apply for a course which was BBB. I knew if she had BBB predictions she’d probably get an unconditional offer. Rang head of sixth form up and explained this and agreed her third subject was probably borderline B/C. She agreed straight away. Dd got an unconditional offer, didn’t make her grades (spent most of year 13 in hospital) got on the course and so far is on track for a 1st class degree.

@QuebecBagnet That’s brilliant. So pleased it all worked out so well for your dd.

I think it really depends on the school or the teacher- there is no harm in asking, particularly as he is showing improvement.
