I think that sounds very positive @icanbewhatiwant . Yes, he just declines everything and makes a new application before mid Jan. new Ps (or he can update last years) but tbh they will probably just make a decision on grades. his school should support with another reference but of course no predictions necessary.

then he can forget about uni for a few weeks and plan a great gap year instead, work out where he wants to go and what he wants to study, apply calmly and hopefully get and accept an offer which should come quickly, and be first in line for an accommodation application. All v positive?

Delphigirl · 19/08/2022 11:09

Re open days - just turn up

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 11:14

Oh @icanbewhatiwant he sounds as indecisive as my DD!
DD knows Leeds T outside Bf warned her. Has now applied to SheffHallam, U of Manchester(one of her offer universities) has a different course she’s interested in which overlaps so she’s gone for that too. She seems to be accepting the situation now. Phew. Glad I came out with the dog and left her to it! No idea where the reputation thing comes from, probably TikTok!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 11:17

He's booking mon afternoon off work to phone around. But not sure how it works really.

mummabear74 · 19/08/2022 11:22

We're no further forward here as it's DD's 18th birthday so are nicely distracted. She has said she'll read through the course content again for the Southampton and Cardiff courses with a fresh head and make a decision but I think it's likely she will reject both. A couple of zoology courses she was looking at yesterday in clearing have gone but I'm not going to tell her and overshadow her birthday.

I've not had a chance to read the thread this morning but I'm thinking of all those still yet to get sorted and wish you luck. I'll be back tomorrow to catch up.

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 11:24

Does anyone know much about university of Leicester? and their journalism.
DS is now considering going through clearing and finding somewhere that still has halls.
he asked Brighton if rooms were likely to become available but they said not usually ??

FeltCarrot · 19/08/2022 11:24

Fingers crossed for her @Benjispruce4 . Manchester is an amazing city and we viewed Sheffield Hallam, another great Uni. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 11:26

Brighton is a good uni for media but I would honestly say that, all round, Leicester is the better uni (and cheaper cost of living).

Monkey2001 · 19/08/2022 11:27

@Benjispruce4 I have been following your horrible time since results and think you are doing all the right things for your DD. I don't know about York, but DS1's GF is at Sheffield Hallam but all her housemates are Sheffield Uni and she belongs to the Sheffield Uni dance society, the two unis are very much entwined. The most important thing is probably that the course is right and that she can get accommodation. If either of those things are in doubt you need ybe careful. Most fall in love with their university town/city. It is really rubbish that the change in student finance is putting extra pressure on them to make a rushed decision. I think I would be enough a gap year at this stage because I would want them to start in a positive frame of mind, but people need to make decisions which work for them. If the BF is already at uni, I guess she won't want to be 2 years behind. Have you looked into why the results were so much lower than expected? Any scope for reviews of marking? I can't remember if you have told us how far off she was.

@tryingmybest13 as a veteran of reviews of markings and appeals, I would definitely advise you to get papers back before you get re-matks. You can then focus on the one most likely to go up. You are not in a hurry as it does not affect a university place, so you can do it in a measured way.

@cheninblanc hope you make progress today. I thought most Falmouth offers were unconditional, maybe they are still planning to accept?

@Alsoplayspiccolo people can be awful, often unintentionally, but that self deprecating bragging thing is something we all see. We are all on here because we want to support our children to achieve their potential, but most of all to be happy. They are all different in their skills and abilities and face different challenges. You are clearly a great mum and are doing a brilliant job, I am sure your DC know that, which is what matters.

Oh this autoformatting is nuts.
DstarD and AstarA in bold in my last post.

Excellent news @EquallyDivided ! I keep meaning to tell you that we hired a cottage near Cirencester one year, as a base for Cotswolds. It was called Dove Cottage and lots of Doves actually visited..was excellent!

Thank you, always appreciate your knowledge and input!
do you know if it’s good for journalism?

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 11:40

A girl I teach who bombed two A levels still got her Lancaster sociology place with ACC and they're in clearing. That's with a placement year.

Check SHU accommodation. I thought they didn't offer their own.

Echoing positivity about NTU. The other possible is Lincoln? Nice city, homely and does well in league tables compared to many newer unis.

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 11:40

@Alsoplayspiccolo that’s what makes this group such a great place to chat.
So supportive of each other and no judgement.

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 11:41

Leicester is solid all round. Is it accredited ? That's regarded as helpful.

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 11:42

@Fiddlersgreen Leicester Uni we liked but know nothing about journalism courses there

Zebracat · 19/08/2022 11:46

@Benjispruce4 bit of a curve ball but University of Hull has sociology and Criminology in clearing. They say they don’t worry about points as much as the whole person. Very good reputation, I know several recent graduates who loved it

craggyrat · 19/08/2022 11:47

@ealingwestmum - netball sounds like a good plan. DS not so slight after two years out of swimming but doing lots of sport again now which is good. He really likes basketball too although quite small.

Zebracat · 19/08/2022 11:49

@icanbewhatiwant you are such a lovely Mum.

KittyMcKitty · 19/08/2022 11:54

@Benjispruce4 Manchester only have 2 courses in clearing- Speech and Language at AAB and Public Health at BBC which are quite a departure from Sociology which sounds like it was her passion so I would encourage her to look carefully at some of the good sociology options available rather then jump at something as it RG or perceived more prestigious (fwiw my ds is going to Manchester to do Philosophy and Politics so it’s a great university but I know from a friends dc last year that it isn’t easy to switch courses when you’re there if that’s in the back of her mind).

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 11:54

@Monkey2001 -thanks, teachers should be back early Sept so we will ask Head to ask them to do that first!

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 11:54

@Monkey she got high Bs but not close enough to warrant remarks. The C was history (A,B,D) bombed last paper!

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 11:56

Birmingham posse: Accommodation now booked!

This sounds productive of your DD. Just keep being patient and hopeful. In a few weeks time all will be a distant memory. I did this 4 years ago - 3 lap tops + 3 mobile phones in the go as so much changes all the time.

boxcar · 19/08/2022 12:11

@Piggywaspushed Was the Birmingham accommodation booking easy enough? DD has a Saturday slot to book (don’t know the time yet) & she’ll be in work so think it’ll fall to me to do on her behalf.

boxcar · 19/08/2022 12:12

Swansea accommodation for DS has been so much easier! Just had to accept & pay deposit. He’s happy he got his first choice.
