@Alsoplayspiccolo I agree totally with DFOD . People show their true colours at times like that and she certainly has.

@EquallyDivided that’s so good to read, a huge well done to him !

@icanbewhatiwant I think a year in industry is a really really positive thing and can set them up for after graduating quite often.

@Benjispruce4 being somewhere you like does help. What are her options currently? Hang in there, she will get sorted, you must be knackered at this point 💐

@cheninblanc I hope Falmouth pull their finger out very very soon.

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 09:14

Trying, to be fair, we saw all his teachers yesterday morning, in school. And by lunch she'd already asked for scripts by the time she emailed us back. So we were one step ahead of you. But still. I'd still do it. I can't see what possible damage / worse it can be.

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 09:18

@tryingmybest13 i agree with @Oblomov22 go for it. We did thus a few years back DS1 got a place so didn’t need this grade but in his case he’d failed by 1 mark. The office said they wouldn’t pay for remark as he’d got in to uni si wasn’t needed but he’d worked so hard on this and would leave with nothing so they asked me to choose which pay to remark. I chose all three and all three moved. Some up and some down by 2-5 - net result 1 more mark! A pass so got my money back ad the office were shocked as this had never happened with movement on all three papers and were thrilled!!

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 09:20

Thanks @Oblomov22 first time I have ever pushed or involved myself. Will do!

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:23

@Volterra DD still asleep. I’m lost the will. I have doubts about St Johns. Not reading terribly good things tbh. She is capable of so much more. Not much in clearing. I honest think she should get a job!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 09:23

@Volterra yes I agree. But Ds wants to go to USA for a year. He's adamant that's what he wants.

Ds has accepted accommodation. He didn't take time reading about accommodation and we didn't view any. On reading reviews it doesn't look good. They are the smallest en suite rooms on campus but nearest to everything. Lots of complains about broken toilets, broken beds, poor wifi etc. £178 week 😳

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 09:26

PS @oblomov we weren't at the school and though DS said some teachers were handing out priority remarks forms (which ours is not) no subject teacher there so he did not cotton on until he got home that he was one mark off. TBH he isn't that fussed as he only cared about his uni place, but on the other hand, he was pretty much on the money with how he had done in his Maths, for example: he knew Maths paper 3 had foxed him and the other two had been grand: his paper breakdown (shown to him by his teacher) confirmed this! So he is bit curious because he thought the three papers for this other subject were all good. He might just have messed up..but stuff it, worth a shot. Just wish his teachers were around to look at the scripts!

@Benjispruce4
@cheninblanc
@ParvuliThankYouDebbie

Can you give us a quick reminder of your situations (original offers, grades achieved, clearing places offered/not offered etc) and why you are still waiting.

DS was in a similar situation 2 years ago.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:40

DD Firm U of York ABB Sociology Insurance Chester BBC
Hot BBC accepted by Chester. Picked Chester randomly(🙄) without our knowledge and doesn’t want to go.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:41

Got

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:42

She’s still asleep has been offered Leeds Trinity and possibly York St John though needs to check this morning.

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 09:45

@icanbewhatiwant hi saw you mention Lancaster and abroad USA options. We visited Lancaster live south so quite a trek but lovely campus and biosciences DD subject and I believe physics too are strong. Not sure about the rest. They attract those living more north plus have lots of internationals. Campus based with noodle bar, pizzeria and college type style like Durham for the halls.

A reasonable walk or short bus ride into town centre. DS1 went for a student friend visit once and had a fab weekend out but said it’s more pubs than full blown Leeds or
Newcastle party vibe.

I’d ring them for a general chat today as mum to scout out if moving is a goer at this stage.

Link below for study abroad at Lancaster www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/global-experiences/study-abroad-outgoing/study-abroad-partners/#biological-sciences-449232-2

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 09:45

That's nice Cranmer. I agree, if you 3 want to give us updates, we can at least be supportive in ongoing battles today.

Fiddlers I'm sorry to be the voice of doom, but I am not surprised that they've (Brighton) (my brother lives there and I go all the time). has got no accommodation. Although some will become available as firm choices drop out. So keep ringing. But most unis barely offer a guarantee to firm choices!

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 09:45

@Benjispruce4 what her her main needs and wants for this coming year? is it York due to her BF?

Zebracat · 19/08/2022 09:46

Weirdly, I feel a bit jealous of all the clubbing and staying out late. Ours did an escape room with her friend and then came out with us for far too much food at our favourite restaurant. She was invited out clubbing, and, as always, turned it down.just not her thing. But she might like it if she went.
@EquallyDivided so pleased for your boy. @icanbewhatiwant your boys certainly know how to press your buttons. He has been adamant from the off that he only wanted Sussex. And Lancaster is very very far. Fact is there may be other, nearer courses with slightly different titles at slightly higher ranked universities in clearing, but if he really wanted one , he would have taken the day off and looked. And if you found him one, he’d probably still choose Sussex!
Sorry for all the clearing issues, it is awful for them.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 09:48

The new list!

NB I have only updated the info from the previous list, so if you're new and would like to be added, let me know. I have also removed a few people who seem to have left the thread but again can reinstate if you are still here. Apologies for any errors, (eg I might well have chosen the wrong course where someone was applying for more than one).

So lovely to see the destinations that have been decided, and solidarity with those who are still in the thick of it.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:49

No she wanted York before bf. She picked it for its Sociology ranking and general good uni status, the grades seemed achievable (ABB) as she was predicted A*AA and she loves the city. We went to look around and so she felt really comfortable with that choice. She wants the uni experience, doesn’t really have clear ambition in any particular area. Is the younger sister to a high achiever and I’m sure that is a factor.

Volterra · 19/08/2022 08:56

@272newnames there are a few more on the Oxbridge rejects thread, come on over !

Thanks @Volterra

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 09:50

@Zebracat yes true. He was predicted distinction BB we knew he'd get D* as he did exam early. But he was worried he wouldn't get BB so didn't apply anywhere else with higher grades. Now he's got AA he's just thinking he could have aimed higher.

crazycrofter · 19/08/2022 09:51

@Alsoplayspiccolo that’s so bitchy of your ‘friend’. It’s her issue though isn’t it, maybe she feels a bit inadequate/guilty and is taking it out on you.

We sent ds on a long convoluted journey across the city to the only grammar he got into, because our local schools are really rough and he’d experienced bullying at primary and at scouts. Also, we felt he was easily led and could be led astray. I remember a friend who lives in a nice suburb where the comps are the best in the city, saying that they wouldn’t send their boys on a long journey when comprehensives are just as good. 😬 I just smiled and nodded!

Best of luck to all those who are still looking for places or for accommodation. It’s so stressful but I’m sure it will work out one way or another. @EquallyDivided your son’s story is so inspiring, well done to him and to you!

Anon778833 · 19/08/2022 09:52

My dd is stressing about her accommodation. She’s still not heard if her application has been accepted, even though she got her first choice.

I hope everyone who had a stressful day yesterday gets sorted.

Also, I find that at times like this, people and their mean behaviour come out of the woodwork (as some of you have experienced). A so called friend of mine sent me a Facebook post about a relative of one of her ex-boyfriends who got higher grades than my dd. I mean, this is someone who has nothing to do with me and nothing to do with her! Completely weird behaviour.

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 09:52

@Benjispruce4 what is really hard is the pyschological effect. They imagine themselves in a city/uni for so long. It is brutal. Long shot, but has she looked at Sheffield Hallam?

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 09:54

I don't get why people have to be mean and dig about grades. Utter nonsense.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:54

Yes @tryingmybest13 its exact that. I’ve suggested a gap year but she’s worried she won’t get back in to study plus the finance rules changes wef next year.
I have suggested SH as he cousin is going this year and I have a relative that went and is prospering. She was unsure but will suggest again if they have anything.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 09:55

Sorry for typos. On phone and predictive text and sausage fingers plus lack of sleep! 🙄
