@sofakingcool i think the accommodation process is ridiculous how different unis have different procedures. I don't understand how they can allocate rooms even down to the actual room number until after results day. It leaves those who go through clearing very uncertain as to whether they will get anything.

Decorhate · 19/08/2022 07:43

Morning all. Hope today brings some resolution those still waiting.

Ds came in after 4.30 and of course it woke me. So have gone into work for a few hours and hopefully he will have got his accommodation login by the time he wakes up.

EachandEveryone · 19/08/2022 07:44

Did anyone hear from St Andrews yet? DN A A and B. She goes in two weeks and nothing has been done. Shes waiting for them to contact her.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 07:47

Ds texted last night to say if I were home he'd have gone into clearing and gone for a better university than sussex. I've looked in clearing and the only one better than sussex with spaces is Lancaster. There aren't that many universities that do history with philosophy. He's accepted sussex and his accommodation. Can he still change if he wants to?

So, as predicted, the sniping about private school has started. 😐

A friend, who has DCs the same age as mine and who has known them since they were tiny, messaged me to ask how DD did.
Her DD is bright, able and very self-motivated; she didn’t involve her parents at all in the uni process, not even to discuss her firm and insurance choices. She got AAA and a place at Bath to do accountancy.

According to my friend, her DC have HAD to look after themselves, because she works full time and simply can’t do it all, whereas mine have had me “running around after them.”
She also told me that mine are lucky to have been able to have a private education “to get their exam grades”.
Lucky that DD was abandoned by the state secondary 5 minutes down the road, because of her ALN?
Lucky that DH lost both parents, so had a small inheritance, every penny of which has been spent on schooling, whilst we drive around in an 11 year old car and have a week’s holiday in Cornwall each summer if we’re lucky?

Sorry for the rant but nothing about DD or DS’s journeys has been about luck; we’ve made the best of some really shitty situations, by using them as opportunities to look for something better, and we definitely HAVEN'T “ bought” exam results.

Rant over.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 07:55

Hope all's well that ends well for Benji, chenin and Parvuli today.

DS went out celebrating with his friends at lunchtime yesterday and messaged me at 6am (when I guess he must have come home) to ask for a wake up call at 11. It's someone's 18th party today and then another one tomorrow I think. So not much uni prep being done here 😱

She’s not your friend.

Know that.

She is jealous, competitive and belittling

Put in some distance. Quietly.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 08:03

Anyone know anything about universities discriminating between U.K. and international students when they have spaces?.

singingstones · 19/08/2022 08:03

I'm sure he can icanbe
Get him to phone Lancaster and see if they would take him, surely he could have phoned them whether you were home or not?!

Also smile and nod, smile and nod. I mean I might have been tempted to comment on how "lucky" the other Dd is to be NT (if she is) but these people are not worth your breath! You know what your DD has achieved and it is EPIC! And a testament to the support you gave, the decisions you made, and of course her hard work and determination!

EquallyDivided · 19/08/2022 08:09

She can F off @Alsoplayspiccolo . Mine are also both in private due to ALN and anyone who takes issue is welcome to trade with me for slogging their way through the EHCP and DLA/PIP processes, supporting DC who have repeatedly been told they are just lazy and need to crack on, having their career options limited by it all.

You have done the right things for your DC and can hold your head up.

cheninblanc · 19/08/2022 08:11

We are still waiting, still can't go into clearing and the social media post from school claiming all students have a uni place is still there. Unbelievable. I go on holiday in an hour and I just want to stay home, the stress of this is awful, no decision at all is worse than a no

Heifer · 19/08/2022 08:11

Really sorry to read about some of the struggles here, really hope things are sorted today.

I hadn't slept properly for the last week and feel shattered so thought I would get a good nights sleep last night - nope, I guess it can take some time for the stress/worry to leave the body.

Hope your DD/DSs hangovers aren't too bad this morning, DD went hockey training then to friends for pres at around 11.00pm before heading off to Liverpool clubbing. No idea what time she got home as I didn't wake up (so I must have got some sleep).. Her bedroom door is closed though so I know she is hope :-)

Take care all and really hope those without offers are sorted asap.

Did all the Uni of Nottingham hopefuls get in? - is there more in via Insurance or clearing?

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 08:13

Hi all - hope those waiting for unis to make decisions or those still looking in Clearing get some resolutions today. There is excellence across the sector: we have such fab unis in the UK!

@Benjispruce4 really sorry to read about your wrestling with Clearing: hard choices! In terms of international students, the planned intakes are over and above UK students - they are in different target pools so are not removing places from Home students (though It can feel like that if you see Clearing spaces for one group!). Recruitment targets are planned a a year in advance. But I know it must be so frustrating!

EquallyDivided · 19/08/2022 08:13

@Benjispruce4 I'm sorry, I don't know. I have just read right through the posts from yesterday and my heart goes out to you.

Also hoping @ParvuliThankYouDebbie and @cheninblanc have decisions soon.

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee and @mummabear74 sorry about Southampton for both of you.

craggyrat · 19/08/2022 08:15

@Alsoplayspiccolo - honestly what an awful thing to say. Glad we are all supportive here. People can be very snidey

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 08:16

Thanks for that @tryingmybest13 it just seems unfair and cold.

horrificbiology · 19/08/2022 08:17

Good luck today @Benjispruce4

cheninblanc · 19/08/2022 08:18

@parvulithankyoudebbie I hope you get a resolution today too x

@Benjispruce4 Yes, it does feel like that. Are you still thinking York St John?

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 08:21

@cheninblanc has Falmouth said why they are still reviewing?

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 08:21

DD still asleep after night out. I don’t think Leeds Trinity is for her. Hopefully York St John will confirm then at least she gets to study in York which is what she wanted. Their campus is actually in the city as opposed to outside as Uof Y is. They have moved up ranks for various things in recent years and seem to have a lot of student satisfaction. I just don’t know any more what is the right thing for her. Thanks all for support as DH at work and DD1 wfh but sailed through this in 2019 so I’m a bit out of my depth.

EquallyDivided · 19/08/2022 08:23

I only posted briefly yesterday. DS got DD in his two BTECs (equivalent to AA), and B in History. His UCAS predictions were DMB and he has been fluctuating B/C in history so we were over the moon. We knew by the end of term he had a good chance of the B and also knew the D* was only subject to moderation but the D in the other BTEC subject was hugely aspirational (the exam was in May so no result till yesterday).

This time two years ago we thought there was a 50/50 chance of getting the necessary 4 in GCSE English, really weren't sure if he was up to A level study and considering another year at level 2. He has done us proud and overcome so much (he has had an EHCP since the end of primary school).

His firm offer was low (56 points) so that went through and we are off for another visit to the campus next week.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 08:24

That’s amazing @EquallyDivided you must be so proud!

272Newnames · 19/08/2022 08:25

Good luck today @Benjispruce4 and @cheninblanc

i agree entirely about the Russell Group thing. It is not the be all and end all, there are some very good too unis who are not part of the Russel group. Lancaster, Bath, St Andrews, Loughborough for example.

@Volterra are we the only ones going to Bath? Haven’t seen anything from @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango who I think was the only other firm for Bath?
