How motivated is your year 12?

Mine does homework (apparently on time and to a good standard), but that’s it. Most of this he can do during free lessons at college so he’s not doing much at home at all. I was really hoping he’d be feeling enthusiastic now he’s doing A’levels, but I’m really not seeing signs of that and no signs of him doing extra stuff related to the degree he wants to do for his university applications. Is this normal or do I need to be concerned?

Has he done mock A levels yet?

DS is doing about 2 hours a night and 3-4 hours Saturday and Sunday, admittedly tucked away in his study so I haven’t got eyes on him, but he says he’s doing homework and revision and recently got 4 A’s in his mocks, so I believe him.

He’s has a uni interview this morning and had to submit 3 audition pieces, he’s had to submit them to all of his choices, so he’s been working on those, and a live audition piece too.

Mine's doing nothing at all at home. He claims he has 'loads' of frees at school and he's doing HW then. He's just had Mocks for Y12 that he appears to have done no revision for, so we'll see.

He is hating school anyway. He's bored, doesn't enjoy A levels and doesn't want to go to university, but there didn't see to be any other choices. Nearest college is 35 miles away and there are no apprenticeships. It was easier to continue into 6th form with his mates, but he is not motivated in the slightest.

@bigroundsun mine was very motivated mainly because he knew what he wanted to do at uni, knew that with his predicted grades of all A*s and applying for a competitive course at oversubscribed universities he would have to demonstrate doing stuff outside of sixth form to put on his personal statement. There would be lots of applicants with the same high grade GCSEs, the same A levels and teacher reference so you have to really show your love of a subject.

He did complete all of his work in his free periods in school occasionally having to do some at home. He did 4 A levels. I think your son needs to start thinking about what he is going to write on his personal statement. Ds was an early entry applicant so his PS had to be submitted before the end of year 12. Better to have way too much for the PS and whittle it down than not enough to fill it.

He spent a portion of his free time on his chosen subject because he truly loved it, didn't need prodding to do it. He started doing stuff in year 10!
