previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I think I have figured out the exam dates. Start on 26th May and finish on 24th June. Second week of June has 3 papers close together so that might be a bit stressy, otherwise seems OK.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/01/2022 16:31

Please can I just pick the brains of Biology people. DS just starting to do practice paper questions for revisiosn and seems OK on Paper 1 stuff (Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics in case you're doing different boards) he was meant to look at a Paper 2 today (Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology) and is telling me that they haven't covered most of the topics in this yet. This can't be right can it?? I don't know whether he just hasn't learnt it or is telling me the truth (should I be cross or not! Grin) We've not even looked at Paper 3 stuff....

Wheresthebeach · 07/01/2022 17:02

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Not sure of the details but I can tell you that DD’s class is behind so much with content that they have put on extra classes to catch up…they have a lot left to do. They have been told to do the simple topics themselves and ask for help if they need it.

Chemistry they hope to finish content by end Feb.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/01/2022 17:34

Thanks @Wheresthebeach I think they are behind too (teacher missing most of the lessons last term didn't help) but I didn't think by that much. he was doing 6.3 last term so I guess they've got at least three more topics to go.

Monkey2001 · 07/01/2022 18:39

The disrupted teaching had confused everyone. DS was given a Physics question for an area of the syllabus the teacher thought they had covered, but none of the class thought they had. I think our school is probably better than many!

Heifer · 07/01/2022 19:09

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn - not sure the answer and DD has gone out to another 18th bday party... But to make your mind at rest a little, DD has previously mentioned that Paper 3 is made up from topics on Paper 1 & 2 so not a whole load of new info. I think P3 may be more essay like - but not sure.

DD has struggled (along with all her class apparently) on her Mocks paper 1 or 2 they were given a big essay type questions worth a lot of points and it was the first essay stlye question she has ever had like it, without any help beforehand. Her teacher thought they had done it before apparently. That's the good thing with lots of tests/mocks at least the teacher can see where help is needed. I don't think DD has covered all of paper 2 stuff yet either by the way.

Heifer · 07/01/2022 19:20

This is DDs A level timetable. I thought it was pretty good really. Each subject is nicely spaced out so if ill/isolating you shouldn't miss all subject exams.

I thought She was lucky that biology paper 3 was a whole week later and she could revise those topics covered without other subjects distracting and that is when she mentioned it paper 3 was all topics.

that didn't work then - I had a photo of my spreadsheet :-) it's showing on my phone but not on PC.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/01/2022 19:29

@Heifer it there. I can see it.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/01/2022 19:29

*it's there. I meant.

Monkey2001 · 07/01/2022 19:31

I can't see it on phone.....

Heifer · 07/01/2022 19:59

I'm stuck, I took a photo of my spreadsheet as I couldn't work out how to turn it into something I could post on here. There must have been a better way. And I've no idea why it's the photo (some of it) is showing when I look at MN on my mobile but not the PC!

Seeline · 07/01/2022 20:35

Encouraging news from DDs school. All pupils were asked to go in yesterday for a lft test. I know they wouldn't have all done it, but there are over 1000 pupils and they had 1 positive! That's a South London location.

Heifer - can't see your photo on my phone

icanbewhatiwant · 07/01/2022 20:38

@Heifer this is what I see....

@EwwSprouts. @crazycrofter We’ve been very lucky as she looked at a shared accommodation today and she got a call to say it’s hers.
Nice and close to the airport with an en-suite which I think was the clincher 😂😂

EwwSprouts · 07/01/2022 21:24

@whoamitojudge She really is on a roll!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/01/2022 21:26

Thanks @Monkey2001 and @Heifer, it’s so worrying wondering what they’ve missed.

EwwSprouts · 07/01/2022 21:40

DS hasn't finished the content in any of his three subjects. School has moved mocks to end of this half-term but I can't see them covering everything by then. I'm now expecting formal exams to be completely ditched.

ExtremelyDetermined · 07/01/2022 22:01

Another offer for DS today, Bournemouth (History), 96 points contextual offer. Pleased with that as its lower than his others.

22Newnames · 07/01/2022 22:12

@Wheresthebeach

DD deeply unimpressed to find that exams go to June 24th...she thought they'd end earlier.
I’m pretty sure DS finishes on 27th which is crap (further maths).
22Newnames · 07/01/2022 22:15

Well done @ExtremelyDetermined

Wheresthebeach · 07/01/2022 22:52

Great offer @ExtremelyDetermined.

27th just seems unreasonable 22

I think exams should be scratched but I’m not convinced they will be. Boris seems determined to act like nothings wrong

singingstones · 07/01/2022 23:06

Re biology, DS's class is behind also. The teacher gave them a whole topic they had to teach themselves over Christmas and there's a test on it on Tuesday. They've had a handout to read but no teaching at all Shock

He's lucky his exams are nicely spaced but having done (or not done) ASs, he only has 6 papers in 4 weeks. One week has three exams and the others one each.

I think exams will happen and DS is hoping they do - he thinks he'll do better that way, we shall see.

He's annoying me by saying his friend's class did the biology test this week so he knows what's on it and only needs to learn the answers to those specific questions. Angry
But my resolution is to leave him to get on with it - he's 18 in a couple of weeks and if he can't make good decisions now there's not much I can do about it Confused

Great offer from Bournemouth, ED

Piggywaspushed · 08/01/2022 07:09

Congrats on the Bournemouth offer EDjr!

BlueMarigold · 08/01/2022 07:58

Congratulations @ExtremelyDetermined! Is this going to be the insurance?
