previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Lots of new offers!

Welcome Appu, to one of the fastest moving threads Smile

BlueMarigold · 06/01/2022 18:43

Welcome @Appuskidu! My DD wants to go to Birmingham. It’s a good sign that you have a DC at Birmingham and still hoping to get another DC in :)

Appuskidu · 06/01/2022 18:50

Ahh, thank you for the lovely welcome! DS absolutely loves Birmingham so do fire away with any questions!

AnneOfCleavage · 06/01/2022 18:59

Welcome Appu Smile

Seeline · 06/01/2022 19:06

Welcome @Appuskidu I love your user name - I loved singing those songs at primary school!

Isthisjustnormal · 06/01/2022 19:43

Welcome @Appuskidu! and what a fab offer @Wheresthebeach: lovely news!

Ds put a few uni kitchen things on his Christmas list so we have the beginnings of a bottom drawer: but taking notes on good sources of towels ;-) I am struggling somewhat with where to store it though!

DS's bed has got a drawer in it that handily isn't easily accessible, so he doesn't use it! So that's going to be the bottom drawer. I told him about the plan earlier and he looked at me like I was going mad, I think he's more concerned about how much clothing and trainer storage he'll get at Uni HmmGrinGrin!
OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 06/01/2022 19:50

Looks like a good deal, if you have a club card.

Ooh that's a bargain! Thanks Orange

Wheresthebeach · 06/01/2022 20:44

@singingstones Nice to have another offer - even if it's not his first choice. Fingers crossed for Nottingham.

Need to give some thought to uni stuff, although with the gap year its less of a concern, but maybe get DD to start saving up a bit...hmmmm

Alsoplayspiccolo · 06/01/2022 20:46

Great offers, wheresthebeach and singing!
Still waiting (im )patiently here for more offers.
mummyinbeds, aw, good for your DS. DD was horrified at the thought that she might be able to buy us drinks in the pub 🤣

Welcome Abbu. DD’s top choice is Birmingham, for English and film, so I’ll join the queue to get the lowdown from you. Smile

EwwSprouts · 06/01/2022 20:47

I like the bottom drawer starter kit plan but DS would say I was fussing. I might squirrel bits away then drip feed them in August Wink

PaddingtonPaddington · 06/01/2022 20:51

Well done on the new offers and welcome @Appuskidu

Loving the towel talk and added a couple of the tesco towels to my next online shop thanks @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. My Parents have offered DD to look through all the contents they kept after they sold their caravan 5 years ago. I remember some interesting highly patterned stuff in there! DD is keen for a rummage.

Parents evening tonight - last one ever. As expected music was excellent but the other 2 subjects have suffered as a consequence of practice, auditions and performances. DD knows she needs to shift her focus just for the next few months. Scarily not that much time left.

Seeline · 06/01/2022 20:51

I really enjoyed doing all the shopping with DS after results. It was a nice bonding time before he went off to uni. This was in 2020 so we hadn't had much opportunity to shop much before then anyway!

Fiddlersgreen · 06/01/2022 20:53

Well done to those with new offers and unconditional offers, really great news.
Welcome Appu, it’s a very friendly and knowledgeable bunch in here!

We don’t really have any storage space for a “bottom drawer“ at the moment but loving the ideas and tips here and also a little bit terrified at all that needs to be done and thought about!

It hadn’t occurred to me that they need absolutely everything (can opener, corkscrew?!) I guess I thought there would be some communal items available.
Those with DC already at uni, where do they store their kitchen stuff, do they have to keep it in their rooms or do they keep it all in the shared kitchen, do they have their own cupboard? So much I haven’t thought about

Dd has been watching uni room videos. She reckons she will have plastic boxes of her favourite snacks, food and equipmemt in her room to stop people stealing her stuff! I remember we had a locked cupboard though. Unless medical reasons, generally they can't have mini fridges and stuff. I think she might be worrying unnecessarily. It has crossed her mind to purchase one of those collapsible washing up bowls though....

My DS was in a self catered flat with 6 other lads last year. They each had 2ish cupboards for cooking equipment, crockery, and storecupboard ingredients. Then one shelf in a fridge and one drawer in a freezer. Despite being complete strangers they luckily got on well. I don't think he kept anything other than alcohol in his room. I think as a flat they bought a toaster - kettle was provided.

But yes, if self catering they need absolutely everything.

Monkey2001 · 06/01/2022 21:22

I think people do still pinch food, particularly milk, and flatmates will use your pots and pans, so if there is anything you care about, it is generally better to keep it in your room. Horrible stories on WIWIKAU about drunk students swapping fridge and freezer stuff around "for a laugh" - grrrr! Be prepared for uncivilized behaviour, then they will hopefully be pleasantly surprised when the flatmates do not do anything outrageous!

Welcome to our supportive little team @Appuskidu

whoamitojudge · 06/01/2022 21:23

Thank you @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and @singingstones for the new thread.
DD is in week 2 of being cabin crew and loving it. Now we are starting the job of finding her somewhere to live.
Huge congratulations to everyone who is getting their offers it’s very interesting reading this thread.

cariadambyth · 06/01/2022 21:26

How exciting to see more offers coming in, a positive start to the new year.
I don’t think I can quite bring myself to start buying for university yet, I too feel it might jinx things, silly really but similarly, didn’t but much when I was pregnant. A psychologist might make something of that!!

EwwSprouts · 06/01/2022 21:35

Hi @Appuskidu

@whoamitojudge Thrilled your DD is enjoying her role. Does she want to house share with others in the industry or have some space to herself?

crazycrofter · 06/01/2022 21:53

@whoamitojudge brilliant news, will she be living with other young people?

@Appuskidu welcome! My dd is also applying for Psychology and has a Nottingham offer. She wouldn’t consider Birmingham because she did years 7-11 at the school right next door. Plus she wants to live in a new city!

Dd got her mock Psychology result back - only a B. She got As in October and June and is predicted an A. I hope she’s chosen the right subject for her degree!

22Newnames · 06/01/2022 21:57

Welcome Appu. This thread is ridiculously fast moving at times. Just dip in and out when you wish.

I am not buying anything for DS for uni as yet. He already has some stuff and the rest can be bought in august when we know where he’s going. I have form for doing things too soon that then get wasted.

Seeline · 06/01/2022 22:14

Oh dear - DD has just found her exam timetable. She's not happy. As she points out she only has 9 papers to sit. She has the first 2 on consecutive days, then 3 in 2 days followed by 3 in 2 days, and then a final one. You would think that chance would allow them to be a bit more spread out!

singingstones · 06/01/2022 22:24

No uni shopping here either - I already have a horrible feeling something is going to go wrong and don't want to tempt fate!
