previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Nottingham open day is 12th Feb? Ds didn't tell me!

Heifer · 17/01/2022 17:43

@Seeline & @JustHereWithMyPopcorn - Just realised I'm not going as only 1 guest so DH is taking DD - plus it's on the Wednesday 9th Feb, as we are booked into Sheffield (at the moment) on Sat 12th.

Heifer · 17/01/2022 17:45

@Oblomov22 - DD is booked in for a Biology one Wed 9th Feb.

Seeline · 17/01/2022 18:09

@Oblomov22

Nottingham open day is 12th Feb? Ds didn't tell me!
I think it depends on the subject. Offer holder days are usually smaller scaled than full open days, so not everyone goes at the same time.
singingstones · 17/01/2022 19:21

Offer no.5 has arrived, AAB from Nottingham, which is the one that DS wants. If he does firm it he'll probably go for self-catering at Broadgate Park which is literally across the road from campus, it's the opposite end from the sciencey bit and medical school, but only about 25 mins walk along the lake iirc

Icanbe I think Sussex is all self-catering on campus, not sure if that is what you meant.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/01/2022 19:21

Seeline yes offer holders day but we're on the 16th Feb! What a shame, I could have spent the day with my secret signal bag of popcorn giving a nod to the MNers. Grin

EwwSprouts · 17/01/2022 19:26

We're at Sheffield on Feb 12th & Nottingham 16th Mar. Who knew that was after accom queue opens?!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/01/2022 19:36

Fab news, singing - lovely to have a full house!

DD is getting more and more despondent, as the only offer she’s had is Reading, which came pretty promptly after she submitted her form. Of course, she’s convinced it means no one wants her, which is tough whilst she’s trying to slog through mocks.

EwwSprouts · 17/01/2022 19:39

@singingstones Great news that Nottingham the favourite has offered and made it all 5. Must have been a super application.

EwwSprouts · 17/01/2022 19:41

@Alsoplayspiccolo The waiting is hard. Presumably she is getting some of the we're still reviewing / waiting for all applications to come emails?

Isthisjustnormal · 17/01/2022 19:42

Great news @singingstones! @Alsoplayspiccolo - ds is stuck on one offer too - and even though he knows his are late offering unis he’s finding it hard as some of his mates have the offers rolling in …

Fonty · 17/01/2022 19:53

Great news @singingstones. He must be chuffed. Don’t worry @Alsoplayspiccolo. We’re also in the only 1 offer as yet, camp! We’ve got Birmingham offer holders day on 5th Feb.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/01/2022 19:54

She had an email from Birmingham, saying her application had been forwarded to an admissions officer, but nothing since or from her other 3 choices, EwwSprouts.
They’re not even unis that are known to wait, like Durham etc, so she’s feeling pretty frustrated.
It’s hard, isn’t it, isthisjustnormal?
I just want to get on with thinking about offer holder days and accommodation etc now.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/01/2022 19:56

Ah, Birmingham is DD’s top choice, Fonty! Her others are Southampton, RHUL and KCL.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/01/2022 20:04

@singingstones sorry yes. I had to go back and re read what if written. I meant no catered option at either Sussex or UEA.

Great news on all the offers. Ds2 has his business exam out of the way. Maybe he will focus on making choices now.

Fonty · 17/01/2022 20:05

Hopefully there may well be an offer from Birmingham very soon then @Alsoplayspiccolo. Sounds promising.

Decorhate · 17/01/2022 20:19

I’m guessing that Sheffield are doing applicant days? Have nagged Ds to check his emails. Though a quick search has revealed that train tickets are very expensive - more than to Leeds which is further away.

crazycrofter · 17/01/2022 20:40

@EwwSprouts I think we’re at Nottingham on 16th March too, although it’s not in my diary?!

My friend’s daughter got into Notts through clearing a couple of years back and got the accommodation she wanted in Broadgate Park, so maybe it’s just the catered halls that get full quickly, as they’re right on campus?

Well done to your ds @singingstones! I hope those with no offers or just one get a few more very soon!

singingstones · 17/01/2022 20:56

The wait is tough and I was getting a bit antsy about Nottingham, but I bet they will all come in a flurry any day now Also and sweep your DD off her feet.

Now need DS to get his arse in gear and book some offer holder days to get that done before the Nottingham accommodation opens. It never stops, does it?

EwwSprouts · 17/01/2022 22:18

@crazycrofter Maybe we'll cross paths. I can't remember is your DD a hockey player too?

@Alsoplayspiccolo Very tough if they're not communicating. Not a message for your DD would want to hear, but I'm shifting to no news might be better news. One of DS friends has had a rejection from Durham and a stellar student (4* plus olympiads, other interests, personable etc) waiting for Cambridge has been rejected by Imperial.
My fingers are firmly crossed for all awaiting updates.

crazycrofter · 17/01/2022 22:23

No hockey played here @EwwSprouts! We’re not a team sports sort of family. In fact, dh and I are totally unsporty/inactive so it’s a surprise that dd and ds are so dedicated to fitness.

@Monkey2001 was it your ds that was on roaccutane? I guessed wrong last time so apologies if I’ve misremembered again! Our ds is really struggling with the side effects.

EwwSprouts · 17/01/2022 22:42

In fact, dh and I are totally unsporty/inactive... Snap! My natural environment is a comfy sofa with a book.

Fiddlersgreen · 17/01/2022 22:48

@crazycrofter I think @Oblomov22 has experiences with roaccutane?
I’m on it myself now, starting with a low dose. Which side effects is your DS experiencing?

22Newnames · 17/01/2022 23:27

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

DS had an email from Warwick last week *@ChristopherTracy* saying they were 'processing' his application. Hopefully they will hear soon.
DS got this email from Warwick and Durham just before Xmas but has heard nothing else since Confused
Monkey2001 · 17/01/2022 23:29

Sorry @crazycrofter, not us, although I have discussed it with a GP dog walking friend. I am seeing her tomorrow if you have any questions. I think her DD used it for a while.
