OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 04/01/2022 08:35

previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Congratulations @Delphigirl

Fiddlersgreen · 08/01/2022 19:47

Oh that’s great @Delphigirl!!

Shimy · 08/01/2022 20:23

Congrats @Delphigirl. That sounds amazing! What grades does he need?

Delphigirl · 08/01/2022 20:28

Thanks everyone! He needs two A levels at C’s or better 👍. So a useful fallback if he tanks one A level completely… and has a brilliant ocean science program at the same sort of level as Southampton.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 08/01/2022 20:40

Wow, that’s the uni in Canada, right?
How exciting! Well done to him, Delphi.

Congratulations to everyone who have had fab offers this week - things are definitely getting real now.

DD had an email from Birmingham today, apologising for the wait for a decision and informing her that her application has gone to an admissions tutor for review.
I’m assuring this is standard?
It suggested it could happen for highly competitive courses or those that require interview, but I don’t think either applies to her course (English and film).

Wheresthebeach · 08/01/2022 21:29

Congrats @Delphigirl - lovely option.

Delphigirl · 08/01/2022 21:32

Thanks, @Wheresthebeach! He might still go for Plymouth though…!

EwwSprouts · 08/01/2022 21:37

@Delphigirl Canada! Brilliant result and so quick.

whoamitojudge · 08/01/2022 21:44

@EwwSprouts I know! I’m so happy for her. Just hope her housemates are nice!
@Delphigirl Congratulations 🥳

Monkey2001 · 08/01/2022 22:14

Congrats @Delphigirl, that is great news. I have to say that I think it would be brilliant to study in Canada, but would feel tough to have a child studying in another continent, St Andrews is far enough for me!

ealingwestmum · 08/01/2022 23:33

Great news Delphigirl, lots of pros and cons ahead to weigh up between UK and Canada I guess? Canada is coming up as favourite right now for DD (and she hasn’t even got an offer yet)!

Isthisjustnormal · 08/01/2022 23:51

Great news @Delphigirl! I spent a year in Canada between 6th form and uni: it's such a beautiful country and so welcoming to incomers too: I had a brilliant experience and would love to go back! I bet it's a great place to be a student.

crazycrofter · 09/01/2022 00:01

Good news @Delphigirl! Is he tempted?!

Delphigirl · 09/01/2022 01:12

Oh you are all so kind, I’m really touched! I’m not sure what he will do. He is in the middle of mocks and feeling a bit disheartened because timed exams are not his thing due to his processing problems, and although he has been working hard he doesn’t feel that these ones are going any better than his previous ones which weren’t good. I hope he is wrong. So the great thing about this offer is that it just gives him an extra - achievable- option on top of a firm and insurance in the UK, which are also quite low offers. I will pay the Canadian deposit and book up accommodation and then we will see what his options are on results day!

Delphigirl · 09/01/2022 01:14

@ealingwestmum remind me where your DD wants to go? is it McGill?

BlueMarigold · 09/01/2022 06:56

@Alsoplayspiccolo Good luck! I assume this is a busy time of year for them. I hope you hear soon.

Oblomov22 · 09/01/2022 07:49

Delph that is so cool.
Everyone seems to be doing so nicely. As a thread we're quite ahead aren't we?

I'm feeling a tiny bit offer-deprived. Worse still we won't get any more till last minute.com. Only 1 Southampton, so far. Durham doesn't offer till last. And the other 3 are PwC and they too we won't hear till way after last submission date of Jan 26th.

Talking of which, has everyone now submitted? Was there 1 or 2 who still hadn't. Please God don't leave it too late. Next Friday 21st please, because school still need to submit after you. I only say this because years and years of submitting tax returns right up until the last second, and then the website crashing ......

Oblomov22 · 09/01/2022 07:55

In fact I would be checking with those dc who haven't submitted what their date plans were?
And secondly e-mailing HoY to request clarification on their deadlines. Surely must schools we've already passed their submission deadlines by now already?

ExtremelyDetermined · 09/01/2022 08:08

Ah yes, tax return. That still needs doing. .

Volterra · 09/01/2022 08:27

DS has a couple more slots to fill. Sorry to bring the thread down but my Dad was admitted to hospital suddenly last week and has cancer, not sounding good though haven’t been told this officially. My aunt is in nearby hospital too and both hospitals have suspended visiting. We were planning to put house on the market in the spring as have been trying to move closer for a bit.

Agent is happy to work viewings and suspend them during Easter holidays and we are going to go ahead as the company DH works for was sold before Xmas which came out the blue. Everything is supposed to be continuing but feel the need to get ducks in a row just in case. My ex neighbour who has been an honorary grandmother to the DC is very ill too. Would like to rewind to last summer at the moment when all was ok really on onwards and upwards.

ealingwestmum · 09/01/2022 08:42

Oh Volterra that’s not the start to the new year you anticipated. I hope your Dad and DC’s honorary Gran get good care, the not allowing visitors in is the worst part of all this covid mess.

@Delphigirl, you’re right, it is McGill she’s applied for. She’s just got to get her stamped transcript off to them now when back at school, so not sure how long it’ll take for her to hear after that. She would have loved to have applied for scholarship (it’s nominal, but it all helps), but can’t as she’s not doing 4 A levels. 3 and a half (AS) won’t count.

I think it’s her safety netting a rejection from Cambridge, but also an opportunity to ‘start again’ where you’re not surrounded by local kids; I get that, but it’s so far away too, and we’re not out of pandemic chaos yet so it’ll be a big consideration if we get to that!

ealingwestmum · 09/01/2022 09:08

Forgot to add Delphi I know you and whereisthebeach are Canadian/have citizenship, but in case your younger one wasn’t aware on the 4 A levels. I know you mentioned iMcGill was a consideration for her…

singingstones · 09/01/2022 09:18

Sorry to hear that Volterra, sounds like you might have a tough few weeks ahead. Things will be good again though. Just keep going.
I feel like ups and downs are equally welcome here so keep posting too, if it's helpful Thanks

Oblomov22 · 09/01/2022 09:38

Poor you Volterra.

BlueMarigold · 09/01/2022 10:08

Sending love @Volterra
