Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Sorry fruitygal got changed to fruitfully

icanbewhatiwant · 14/12/2021 21:04

I don't know whether he's really bad or exaggerating. Dh picked up his laptop from him earlier and said he looked fine. I didn't realise there was a walk-in centre in Norwich open until 9pm. So he could have called them. He had a blocked up nose, cough etc starting last weekend. Tuesday I suggested a pcr he posted that back weds. By the weekend he says his jaw was hurting a lot, he could eat or stop coughing. Spoke to walk in gp Saturday who refused to see him. Said it's covid. Covid result came back Monday as negative. He says he can't stop coughing and feels weak. I just messaged and said I'll collect him 7am and go to the walk-in. Then find out what is wrong. Then if all is well o can go to my mums still. I can either drop him home or back to uni house. But he's saying no.

Delphigirl · 14/12/2021 21:12

Not sure @Alsoplayspiccolo - I think probably top 2 though

HibiscusIsland · 14/12/2021 21:13

I missed out that they are all Biology fruitygal

icanbewhatiwant · 14/12/2021 21:15

He's messaged to say he doesn't want me take him. He won't let me in if I turn up 🤷‍♀️ he doesn't want to come home yet either.

Piggyinblankets · 14/12/2021 21:17

I said this before ican but it sounds like what DS had , which I think was an ear infection. A chemist might advise?

Nard75 · 14/12/2021 21:30

@icanbewhatiwant if he is saying he doesn't want you to pick him up maybe he isn't that bad and you can still go ahead with your trip.

@crazycrofter fingers crossed for a change in attitude. At least DS2 mocks finish tomorrow and he can relax now.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/12/2021 21:43

@Nard75 I just told him to video call me or I would drive to Norwich first thing. He didn't video call, just voice call, he was his usual angry, shouty self. He said don't come. He's not coming home. He said he's 20 and quite capable of looking after himself. I told him he can't go from telling me an hour ago that he isn't strong enough to cough up what is on his chest and that he's too weak to drive and to now saying he's fine. He was coughing very loudly on the phone, as in he didn't sound weak. He had no problem raising his voice to me, that didn't make him cough. So I think he's probably exaggerating a bit. I'm sure he feels rough though.

I'll go to my mums and trust he will go to a dr. DH is here if he was urgently needed.

Dc's certainly cause too much worry. It's even worse when they aren't living at home.

EwwSprouts · 14/12/2021 21:52

@Volterra Excellent news, what a relief for you.

@Zebracat Brilliant news! So pleased.

@HibiscusIsland Welcome and as another vested in biology! It's amazing given how many universities offer biology that the DC on this thread all seem to have made some choices in common.

@Horace123 So terribly sad for all.

Fruitygal · 14/12/2021 21:53

@icanbewhatiwant so your husband went to see him already? I'd face time and gauge where things are.

Could he be struggling mentally and using illness as an excuse as he can't face the deadline he has?

If his Jaw is bad when you face time it could be wisdom teeth infection which can refer into jaw or ear infection both need antibiotics asap and therefore if he is being stupid about dealing with medical things I would ask him to get a cab to the walk in NHS centre and get seen.

Otherwise if he refuses to do this just rock up and get a housemate to let you in - using the excuse you acted like a child so I treated you like one.

EwwSprouts · 14/12/2021 21:57

@HibiscusIsland Have you paid UCAS? If you haven't then it may not have gone off yet. I don't know anyone where school has made the payment, though I'm sure some do.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/12/2021 21:59

Glad it went well @AnneOfCleavage I was so enchanted by Rose Ayling Ellis in her lyrical dance outfit being spun around ..always remind me of fairies 🧚

The show was good Dd had quite a leading part in the Coventry Carol. She made her own arrangement for What are you doing and also sang a Sondheim. I got quite emotional at a piece she wasn't in with a flautist and violinist...thinking about how much they have missed out performing etc. There was a bit of awkwardness with stage presence / where they should sit etc quite understandable really.

I didn't know we were supposed to pay. The school haven't mentioned it. I normally pay for stuff as not on free school meals. I'd better email the school about it

Fruitygal · 14/12/2021 22:11

@icanbewhatiwant just saw your last post - you are very tolerant - I would not accept that level of undue stress and disrespect. If he wants to be an adult he has to behave like one and get medical support from walk - in or A & E dependent on how severe. He will get a better chance to mitigate for a delay in submission of an assignment to the uni if he has documented medical evidence from the walk in or the A& E. So it is very much in his interest to get to be assessed.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/12/2021 22:17

I'm just going to leave ds1 to get on with it.

@Fruitygal yes DH went to get his broken laptop from him. It's been dropped at our local computer shop. He said he was only there a couple of mins but Ds looked fine. They don't really speak to each other much. So I don't suppose much conversation was had anyway. I don't think he's struggling. I'm sure he's been ill. He shouldn't have left his work to the last minute. He has always done that.

Fruitygal · 14/12/2021 22:34

@HibiscusIsland its normally £26.50 and you pay it before the centre (the school/college) send their bit off.

HibiscusIsland · 14/12/2021 22:40

Thanks. I don't usually miss stuff like that and dd would normally remind me if I did, but I've emailed to check.

HibiscusIsland · 14/12/2021 22:42

Nothing on wisepay

Delphigirl · 14/12/2021 22:43

The concert sounds lovely @AnneOfCleavage and your DS sounds gorgeous
@Zebracat Wonderful news with the Warwick offer!
Hope mini @Monkey2001 had a great interview
Thanks all for kind wishes, you are all lovely

Delphigirl · 14/12/2021 22:49

Sorry about your DS @icanbewhatiwant - that sounds worrying and infuriating in equal measure. Does he have a sibling? Cousin? In that situation I would get DD (older) to message DS and say “stop being an arse and go to the dr” or something affectionately sibling-esque. That would usually work. Any chance?

Piggywaspushed · 14/12/2021 22:53

My DS1 has broken laptop too. And phone. And a sore jaw... do we actually have the same DS!?

HibiscusIsland · 14/12/2021 23:02

Just asked dd and she paid it herself! I will pay her back.

Fiddlersgreen · 14/12/2021 23:07

Well I think that’s a first on here! At least you know it’s sorted now
HibiscusIsland · 14/12/2021 23:10

Yes. I've transferred the money to her account

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 14/12/2021 23:26

Just remembered some Unis are into Action Short of Strike, so there may well be delays until after Christmas for offers that require academic input.
