Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/12/2021 17:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and the updated list @singingstones.

I can't keep up wit you lot, because I'mnot on here generally at the weekend I find Monday catch up a bit overwhelming so I'll just jump in here and hope I get the gist of things!

Felt very depressed after Bojo speech last night. It's coming isn't it.

Piggyinblankets · 13/12/2021 09:09
@Piggyinblankets DS not applied for Oxbridge but he has friends who have had interviews so was just wondering when they would find out. It has been a lot of extra work and pressure on them so well done to everyone who applied.
If Oxford, it's 11 Jan I think.

If Cambridge not til 25th Jan ! (Burn's Night...)

Heifer · 13/12/2021 09:11

@Oblomov21 I've just seen your photos lovely wreath and all but that poached pears chocolate ganache tart looks devine - what recipe do you use? would love to make that myself.

estherfrewen · 13/12/2021 09:16

I work 17 hours a week back to WFH. I used to work more before DS. DH is retired - he has a serious head injury after an assault at work before I met him. He does pretty much all the housework but I do all the family ‘admin’ and deal with everything like that as he isn’t capable of doing that. We have a good balance and are very lucky I think. I don’t work Monday or Friday so we are currently out for coffee. DH thinks he is very fortunate as he has been able to spend so much time with DS since he was a baby.

Wheresthebeach · 13/12/2021 09:37

I wish I knew what to believe @JustHereWithMyPopcorn - Bojo is fighting for his political life right now, and this sort of dramatic announcement, not having warned GP's before hand, is a great distraction. I'm pro vaccine and desperate to get my asthmatic DD boosted but they've taken 16-17 yr old asthmatics out of Group 6 so she isn't eligible. She had her second jab in June so waning immunity but no booster. We will try our luck at a walk in but I have to wonder why they are ignoring asthmatics and denying boosters for these kids?

ChristopherTracy · 13/12/2021 09:54

New thread already - I cant keep up!

Zebracat · 13/12/2021 12:42

Thanks for the lovely new thread and lovely new list. I feel a bit responsible too @ealingwestmum. Wondered if my ignorance was too provoking! But it was not just me,so that’s ok!
Still no offers at all here, but lots of information from places, so hopefully that’s a good sign. Sorry some of us having such tough times. I just spent the night with my son , his wife and their gorgeous babies,so feeling very blessed.
I got early retirement on mental health grounds in 2012. It was a stinking job, really stressful. Broke me.The miracle is that I lasted through 25 years and 4 children. I love every minute without it.
Tree is up but naked I quite like it. Smells fab. Window fill needs work though!

@Wheresthebeach Ridiculous that the nhs staff had that thrown at them last night like they are not already overwhelmed. I can not understand why asthmatics have been taken out of group 6, it makes no sense to me at all. If you have no luck with a walk in, can you phone your GP to get an appointment? Given the way things are now a free for all I can' se how they could refuse?

ealingwestmum · 13/12/2021 13:19

It wasn't your ignorance Zebra. It's more about her, not us.

Spending time with the family sounds like it was a real tonic. I'm loving the smell of pine too. Less so the clearing of needles. And it's not even been 24 hours!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 13/12/2021 13:21

@Zebracat love your wreath! Mine is a bit old and tatty but I like it. My tree went up last weekend and I think it looks lovely. It's too big for my room though since we did it up, I've had to remove some furniture to fit it in! Grin

Monkey2001 · 13/12/2021 13:32

One of the (many) odd things about Boris's announcement was that there was no acknowledge that they want to do over 1,000 a day over the Christmas and New Year period, he is expecting so many people to give up their Christmas break, but don't cancel your parties - oh no!!! Oh, and pay rises? You don't need those NHS.

DH's party now cancelled because a load of people who went for a drink on Thursday have now tested positive.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 13/12/2021 13:37

Our local walk in couldn't cope with the number of people it already had, not enough parking, people queued right down the road. No idea how they are going to manage all the extra numbers.

My friends office party for this week has also been cancelled but not because of an outbreak in the office, just to be safe.

Wheresthebeach · 13/12/2021 14:19

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn - We will try the walkin this week - fingers crossed although the queues look insane. GP not yet doing any vaccines - I rather hope the little clinic they opened up in the Scout Hut opens up again. All staffed by the local GP's and nurses so its all familiar faces. GP was lightening quick over our egg free flu vaccine this year - phone call in Sept advising order arriving in 48 hours and booking us both in so I feel they will do everything they are allowed to.

Wheresthebeach · 13/12/2021 14:19

DH's Xmas works drinks cancelled as well. Just to be safe.

Hattifatteners · 13/12/2021 14:44

Just checking in for the new thread. Thank you @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and @singingstones for the very useful list!

DD had her interview with Liverpool that she called 'weird' and will have Nottingham interview on Thursday. No words from Bristol or Edinburgh yet. Congratulations for those that have had offers, goodness knows how long we will be waiting...

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 13/12/2021 14:44

Please everyone keep fingers crossed that Dd performance doesn't get cancelled tomorrow night. I've not seem her sing since Feb 20 and she is doing an Ella Fitzgerald song Xmas Grin.

Just been for my booster jab. I thought it was at the other side of town (where I work) but was only five mins walk away..I just go the place names mixed up!

Wheresthebeach · 13/12/2021 14:49

Fingers crossed Orange - I imagine you're really looking forward to seeing her perform.

Did you have an appointment or was it a walk in? Thinking of trying our luck with walk in after school but it seems queues are hours long...

Hatti hope the interview goes well.

ealingwestmum · 13/12/2021 14:50

🤞🤞

ExquisitelyDecorated · 13/12/2021 14:52

We moved our work Christmas meal from this coming Fri evening with partners to last Fri lunchtime without partners as a precaution.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 13/12/2021 14:52

X-posted, 🤞for her @OrangeCinnamonCocktail

Decorhate · 13/12/2021 15:00

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail 🤞it goes ahead. I’d love to hear it too. Ella Fitzgerald is favourite of mine.

Decorhate · 13/12/2021 15:07

@icanbewhatiwant When I went back to work full time, after several years not working or just doing a few hours, it took me at least a year to get used to it.

I rarely do anything in the week other than make dinner & put on a load of laundry. Most weekends I only have time for a quick Hoover and clean the bathrooms & kitchen. No way would I ever Hoover daily. But I don’t have a dog...

Oblomov21 · 13/12/2021 15:37

Heifer, I have never made that chocolate tart before. I just looked it up. Recipe attached.

Aw I'm also crossing my fingers 🤞as DD also in a concert tomorrow evening and is doing a solo dance - haven't seen her dance since November 2019 so am so ridiculously excited. Was offered my booster at the pharmacy I volunteer at today but I declined as was worried I'd have a reaction (like I did after A/Z) and have to miss seeing it. Am booked for one on Wednesday which I will definitely have despite DH having booked Thursday off work so we can have a "date" so I'm hoping I'm okay for that.
We love a bit of Ella here Orange so would have loved to see her perform.
Got a feeling I will get v emotional as last chance I'll see her perform before Uni and it's been so long since we've been to see something normal like this in aaages. I also used to well up at nativity plays and Carol concerts she was in too. I call it my yearly cleansing 😁
