Thread 25 - Covid Cohort - Christmas Trees, No Omicron Please!

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided, for anyone interested, they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Aww thanks so much. She is v nonchalant about it all but she seems to consistently get high marks in her exams. After this one her dance teacher at her dance academy (she has 1-1 privates as was a late starter so we wanted to catch her up and then never stopped the 1-1s although does do other dance classes) has asked her to think about signing up for doing the dance associate - exams that I believe mean you can teach dance - but I don't know how one that takes.
We think we should probably definitely take a gap year now so phoned up Bristol UWE to ask them who said that they would need to know asap if that was the case and in writing. Oxford Brookes (her insurance) said to let them know after offers and exam results so two very extreme answers. Still have 3 more to ring but does anyone know the definitive answer? The gap year was always a thought but now she thinks she definitely will take one but put 2022 start on her ucas form when she submitted it back in October.

Her top choice Uni does have dance as a Uni course but not on the site she is on but she can shuttle bus between them. Drama is on her site so there will be clubs she can join I'm sure and she'll want to continue just to keep her hand in, unless she feels intimidated by the calibre.

Yes, that's currently the back up to the back up but may go up or down the preference list if / when he visits.

Wheresthebeach · 22/12/2021 14:17

Ah that's great Singing

Zebracat · 22/12/2021 14:25

Congrats on the offer, singing stones.
Ours made a mistake on course selection. She doesn’t meet the criterion for half of a joint honours course so they have told her to pick something else but it’s so hard under pressure. I did keep telling her but she obviously thought I was nitpicking. So far have resisted saying I told you so.

crazycrofter · 22/12/2021 14:42

Good news @singingstones! Today must be the last day in the office for universities then!

@Zebracat that is tricky; what are the options?

Zebracat · 22/12/2021 15:39

They are almost limitless, unfortunately, makes it hard to choose, but she wants to combine history with at least elements of data analysis, and with increasing digitisation of archives and of qualitative information, this makes sense. And if she can’t get a job as a historian, and most history graduates can’t, the data analysis elements would , I think , make her more employable. The website is hard to navigate and the option that looked great for her has been withdrawn.Wonder if it might just be better to withdraw from that uni, although she has really good reasons for wanting to go, or opt for single honours and hope they let her do an additional class in data analysis. I have been really surprised at how few arts courses offer some combination with computer skills. It seems a missed trick to me.

I regularly find free online courses that cover those areas for postgrad students if you need them @Zebracat. Not ideal I know ?

Yes I know there are fantastic free online courses, but studying at degree level has more cachet, and also she wants to use those skills within her degree.

Zebracat · 22/12/2021 15:56

The Warwick Liberal Arts Course, does this beautifully though, and she has an offer from there. So that may be a better fit for her.

PaddingtonPaddington · 22/12/2021 17:10

Great news @singingstones and everyone else who has been receiving offers over the last few days. There seems to be a flurry of pre Christmas offers.

Well done on the dance and singing exams too, both excellent results.

Drum roll, DD has pressed the reply to offers in UCAS hub and accepted her offer at Royal Welsh College of Music! Still all very surreal and seems the next job is applying to student finance in March.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 22/12/2021 17:14

Ah, Paddington, I’m thrilled for her!
It’s a lovely, friendly conservatoire, with so much going on and great links with BBC NOW and WNO.
I hope she’ll be very happy in Cardiff Smile

Our first acceptance!! Congratulations to Dd. How exciting

@Zebracat 25 years ago I did a history degree at Leicester Uni and we did a module every year called ‘Computing for historians’ which covered coding, database analysis etc. I can’t believe it’s not more common than it is. I really enjoyed it although I didn’t really go on to use those skills

Zebracat · 22/12/2021 17:55

Didn’t look at Leicester, too close to home. Typical!

ealingwestmum · 22/12/2021 18:55

That’s fantastic Paddington, it sounds perfect for her, and a great city too.

Isthisjustnormal · 22/12/2021 20:14

Wow @PaddingtonPaddington: that's so exciting: does it feel weird to be on the 'next step' of the process?! DS still only has one offer, but all of his others are known late-offer-ers.
@Zebracat: that sounds like a really fab combination: and as you say, very employable! How annoying not to have it as standard...

crazycrofter · 22/12/2021 20:26

Brilliant news @PaddingtonPaddington and do I remember rightly that it’s a low offer because of auditions?

20newnames · 22/12/2021 20:48

Wow @PaddingtonPaddington that is great news! How nice to be moving on and not waiting on unis.

Monkey2001 · 22/12/2021 20:55

Congratulations Paddington! More than a little jealous - as a medicine applicant DS won't get his decisions before March - lovely that it is just EE too, no pressure at all!

EwwSprouts · 22/12/2021 21:00

Excellent news @PaddingtonPaddington. Certainly puts an end to the would x or y be better? Pleased to see offers are still coming in.

Congratulations to those acing the dance exams.

singingstones · 22/12/2021 21:16

Great news Paddington, I'm sure she will have a great time at RWCMD.

whoamitojudge · 22/12/2021 22:11

I just wanted to share with you all that today DD passed her last exam and is now a fully fledged cabin crew for Lauda Europe ( part of the RyanAir group)
To say that DH and I are proud is an understatement. It’s been her dream since she was young and she’s gone out and got it. Shes coming home for Christmas tomorrow and for the first time in forever I’ve got Christmas Eve off ( retail worker) and DH will be working a half day from home! So happy right now.
Well done to everyone getting offers and I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas

Volterra · 22/12/2021 22:12

Really good news PaddingtonPaddington. Great city, DD’s going to find it hard to leave if she needs to. She won’t be here for Christmas as has just tested positive for Covid.
