Thread 23 Covid Cohort Stepping Into Christmas, Tests, Mocks & Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 18:33

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Oblomov21

Piggy "supports learners BUT widens the gaps we are supposed to be closing... "

Supports learners. But closes gaps? Which gaps are those?

Attainment gaps between disadvantaged groups and the rest. Homework exacerbates issues.
Piggywaspushed · 15/11/2021 14:09

I must be honest PK , whoever she is, is a bit of a doom monger and also is talking nonsense in places...

I don't like (considering who her audience is) that she uses words like 'force' and 'shocker'.

I don't think 'continuously revising ' in and of itself is a bad strategy.

crazycrofter · 15/11/2021 14:14

Just had a letter from DD’s school to say that this term’s class tests will be completed under ‘high control’ so that they qualify as mocks!

Wheresthebeach · 15/11/2021 14:16

Glad it's gone in Popcorn. UCAS site was down over the weekend for 'maintenance' which infuriated DD as offers come through on Saturday's as well.

Monkey2001 · 15/11/2021 14:28

Much more positive angle from Mr Salles -

Hattifatteners · 15/11/2021 14:50

Welcome @Budapestdreams
When it comes to parental involvement re schools/universities, it's me 90%, DH 10% Grin.
DD's mocks have been moved from February to the beginning of January. She isn't happy as it means that she needs to revise during the Christmas break.
On a more cheerful note, DD received an interview invitation from Liverpool today Smile

BlueMarigold · 15/11/2021 15:10

Congratulations on your DD’s interview @Hattifatteners!

ealingwestmum · 15/11/2021 15:12

Great news on the interview Hatti

Monkey2001 · 15/11/2021 15:20

Hurray @Hattifatteners, good luck to her! Hope to see lots of interviews as well as more offers over the next couple of weeks.

Shimy · 15/11/2021 15:50

Well done to @JustHereWithMyPopcorn’s DS, now let the offers roll in.

Congratulations to @Hattifatteners
DD, good luck to her with the interview.

crazycrofter · 15/11/2021 16:13

Congratulations and good luck to your dd @Hattifatteners

DoggerelBank · 15/11/2021 16:15

@Monkey2001, thanks for the Mr Salles link. He's great! Will try to get DS to watch.
@Hattifatteners and @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, great news!

Wheresthebeach · 15/11/2021 16:17

Great news @Hattifatteners.

icanbewhatiwant · 15/11/2021 16:17

@Oblomov21 ds3 seems to have a fair bit of homework. But not sure whether it's the same as the other ds's. I can't remember. He had maths, German, art and English over the weekend. But that was probably set over the whole week.

@Fruitygal have they said under 50's can have a booster too? I missed that. Mine isn't due until end of December anyway.

Great news for those getting offers/interviews. As for Ds...he's not even started on his PS yet. He said he has mocks later this month, when he's done them he will start his PS and looking at other universities. I wish he'd get a move on.

Fruitygal · 15/11/2021 16:34

@Hattifatteners congratulations to your DC on Liverpool interview!

ChristopherTracy · 15/11/2021 16:36

I dont think our school is even sending off the forms until Jan!

Fruitygal · 15/11/2021 16:42

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn congratulations!!! what were the final choices ?

Fruitygal · 15/11/2021 16:56

@ChristopherTracy what does you DC want to do ?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/11/2021 17:02
@JustHereWithMyPopcorn congratulations!!! what were the final choices ?
Notts, UCL, Birmingham, Warwick and York. Sitting the LNAT on Thursday with a head injury .

Isthisjustnormal · 15/11/2021 17:33

DS's mocks aren't until Jan too: not heard anything that suggests school are planning to move them: that's the kind of change that will stress (autistic) ds out, so hope not in one way. I cannot imagine how furious this process must be making teachers: I do sometimes wonder if anyone whose ever been involved in an actual school makes these decisions!

@Budapestdreams - my DS is applying for comp sci - but prefers the theoretical maths-y courses rather than the more development/programming based ones, so there may not be loads of overlap with where your ds might or might not be applying ;-)

Totally relate to the exhaustion a few of you have expressed. I'm starting a new role today and feeling spread so horribly thin: dd (Y11) has had SO much less support in comparison to how involved I was with ds. And all of us are sick of looking at UCAS stuff! DS is going on one last visit next Friday and we've agreed after that he'll just put his last three choices in regardless!

Heifer · 15/11/2021 17:34

Congrats on the interviews :-)

Input Me 95% DH5%
Appreciation shown from DD to Me 5%, DH 95%

Piggywaspushed · 15/11/2021 18:06

Input : Me 99.9%. DH 0.1% which consists of him coming to an Open day if it is part of a longer weekend/day trip . And asking annoying questions after all the applications are done.

ChristopherTracy · 15/11/2021 18:06

@Fruitygal Mechanical engineering or an apprenticeship I think.

Fruitygal · 15/11/2021 18:29

@ChristopherTracy Engineering sounds great - is your DC leaning more towards degree or apprenticeship?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/11/2021 18:36

Input: Me 100% appreciation 0%
