Midwifery course

I'm currently on an access to health education and I am looking to get into midwifery. I am wanting advice on what the best thing for me to do in personal situation is. I have 2 children (2,1) and I am wanting to either have another child or 2 but I'm so undecided about whether I try for a baby before I start university or after I've finished my degree. What would you advice purely on your own experiences etc?

How long would you take off? Most unis will have a maximum amount of time between an access course and you starting the degree so youd need to consider that - and also that entry requirement etc could change. Childcare could also be horribly expensive for 3 or 4 under 5’s.
I’d suggest doing your degree, couple of years getting established and then more children. It’s a tough career with one kid let alone potentially four.

@SometimesRavenSometimesParrot thank you for the reply :) it's about 5 years the access course counts towards uni, I'm not sure if that changes anything x

So you’d need to be confident that if you took a break in between access course and degree that you’d be ready to apply by September 2026 and that you’ve got some relevant experience in the year prior.

I would have the children after uni. The course will be tough and there will be lots of placements which will cost a fortune in childcare and also be difficult to arrange due to unsocial shift hours.

I did a nursing degree with two primary school age kids and it was really tough and exhausting. When I look back I’m amazed how I got through it.

I personally think you would be crazy to try do a midwifery degree with 4 young kids. Better to get the qualification and then quickly start having the kids (age permitting).

For me it would be the degree or the children. Working and doing a degree with 4 young children would kill me. Especially such a demanding job where lives are at stake. It’s very difficult to see how you can juggle all of this satisfactorily with very young children. How will they be cared for?
