no idea what to do post 16

My DD is in year 11 and has no idea at all what she wants to do post 16. She knows what she doesn't want to do and that is work with animals, old people, small children or manual work. She also doesn't want to do A levels. She enjoys drama but hates her GCSE, likes working with older children 9 plus but not teaching. We have been to a few open days she has hated all of them and all the courses they offer. She will not discuss her next steps at all. The perfect course for her would be either a journalism or working with older children course but there seems to be nothing out there like this at all.

The only course I can find that may fit in with the working with children route is health and social care but she is adamant she doesn't want to work in a healthcare setting or work with old people. Does anyone know if you can do this course specialising more in sociology or psychology than dementia or health care??

Are they any vocational journalism type or working with older children vocational courses in existence does anyone know??

Most new journalists nowadays have done a degree in it (I am sorry to say).

What sort of journalism does she have in mind? There are very many fewer roles than there once were. Does she write anything now - a blog, reviews?

What sort of work would she want to do with older children? Sports, TA, social work? I can think of loads of jobs that fit her brief tbh.

Meant to say has she looked at local apprenticeships?

Xiomara22 · 04/10/2021 23:49

Sounds like how I was I just ended up going to the feeder college and did a levels in things I thought I might enjoy. Did a year of a levels then 2 years of a btec but still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, Just knew I wanted to make big money but they all seemed to be jobs aimed at males so went trying different types of jobs none ever seemed just right. One day when I was 21 local paper was offering apprenticeships in engineering with a local firm. Many years later and lots of amazing qualifications and making lots of big money I’d found what I was looking for. Didn’t think a manual job was for me but the money makes it worth it. My advice is she shouldn’t rule out anything before trying it.

Is she at all sporty / outdoorsy?
Wondering about Outdoor Pursuits which could lead to working for something like PGL?

I think at college level the BTECs will be giving a across the board foundation so you wouldn't find courses already specialising. Health & Social care isn't a bad foundation for anything working with people, including youth work I would have thought.

Or maybe an apprenticeship, though if you are going outside of standard ones it may be a bit hit and miss what is available in your area.

Performing Arts BTEC?
Business BTEC?

What kind of grades is she predicted? If clever enough A levels would keep her options open most, eg English, Sociology & Drama BTEC Certificate?

Otherwise it is hard if you are 15 and have to pick a vocational course when you are so young.

There are journalism apprenticeships but I would imagine that this would be very competitive.
I would also look into an apprenticeship or other course for Youth work which tends to cover children 11 years old and above.
For the health and social care courses the colleges tend to choose the options for you.

It sounds as if she needs professional career advice. Tell us more about her interests and hobbies etc.

TheEleventhMonth · 26/11/2021 20:00

Has she signed up to morrisby.com and done her profile yet? They suggest some careers - might be worth a try - not expensive and membership is for life.
