Just moved back to the U.K., am I eligible for funding for an apprenticeship?

Hi all,

Been living abroad for a few years, but I am a British citizen.

Am I eligible for funding for an apprenticeship?

The criteria says as long as you're 16+, living in England and not in full-time education, you should be able to start one, but I thought I'd double check.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Do you have to have been back living in the UK for a certain amount of time?

@dementedpixie

Do you have to have been back living in the UK for a certain amount of time?

That's what I'm unsure of.
Apparently if you're not a British citizen, you have to have been settled in the U.K. for 3+ years. But there's no indication that you'd need to have done so if you're a British citizen which is quiet confusing.

If it includes a level 3 qualification and you are 19+ you will need to have been resident in UK or EEA to qualify for funding.

Yes I think you can. The criteria appears to be over 16, living or eligible to live and work in the UK and out of full time education.

I've been within the EEA, so should be fine. Thanks for your responses!

[quote titchy]No sorry you need three years residency. See E263.2 here:

Link isn't working for me, but I've done a bit of research and if you're a British citizen and have been within the EEA, you're eligible for funding so that's a relief.

Why do people post this!

Ordinary residence is not based on physical residency alone. If you left the UK for a temporary contract for example, then you remain ordinarily resident here.

Thanks for the info Brooze, I'd fall into that category so think I'll go ahead with the application. Appreciate the reply!

@Brooze what - why do people post links to eligibility from Government websites when posters ask for information about eligibility? No idea....Hmm

If that link includes residency in EEA then you're ok - there was a special arrangement for UK citizens living in EU because of Brexit for six years or so.

Why do people post comments saying that ordinary residency is based on physical presence?

I worked in Asia for the best part of a decade. As I could prove it was never intended to be a permanent move, I was considered to be ordinarily resident in the U.K. for those years.
