Has anyone's DC done this course? Any thoughts about the course content, what it led to next, whether it's a worthwhile course etc would all be appreciated.
Everyone I know IRL (& and on here and seems) has DC doing A-levels with a view to University, but my DS just isn't academic, loves his sport and isn't ready for the world of work or interested in any apprenticeships. He's Y11 so needing to make decision before too long.

A friend of ds2's did this or similar as part of a post-16 football programme. He played for the club and did the BTEC. He's off to a highly rated uni to study sports science so it must have been good. A levels are not for everyone.

I agree, A LEVELS are not for everyone.

Btec Sport is a great option as long as the student doesn't think it's going to make them a football star etc. But it can lead into entry at good universities for courses like Sports Science.

My ds sounds a bit similar. He is clever but not academically minded. He's doing a music Btec and to honest part of the reason was to keep him engaged and in education a bit longer. (he's autistic too and not ready for work just yet). Fast forward a year and he's preparing for appliations to uni and conservatoire with a view to a career as a portfolio musician/arranger/keyboard programmer/transcriber

And ds's form tutor at secondary school had been an aspiring football player at a premiership academy but got injured. He did the Btec Sport followed by a PGCE and became a PE teacher

Thanks all that's really helpful. He's definitely not destined for pro sport career but as you say @Comefromaway it keeps him in education a bit longer and he might have more idea what he wants to do in a few years or hoping this might show him other options

Both my sons did this course alongside playing football. Both then got good entry level ucas points for university.

Dn did one in Football, originally hoped to move into Sport Science or Business Studies at uni but now works for a finance firm. He did a year of AS/A level first but found it not for him so swapped.

My son is doing the extended diploma in sport (so equivalent of 3 A levels). It has been a good choice for him as he is unsure about what he wants to do next and would not have liked 3 academic A levels. That's not to say the course isn't hard, it is. Unlike his A level friends he has written extended essays, including research methods so actually a really good prep for Uni if they want to go, plus external marking of exams, written work and practical (so by far more assessed than the A level carry on1).
He probably won't go to Uni but at his school they make them do a UCAS application anyway and you realise that it isn't just sports related courses that are available to them, things like physio of course but because most universities use a points system now a wide range of things, he has looked at police degree, business and finance amongst other things.

DD did one in cricket studies. She loved it and although she then changed her mind and decided she didn't want a career in cricket, she got enough points for uni and has just gone off today 😊

Hi Everyone,

There are so many supporters on this thread of BTEC and children who have benefited from these qualifications. The sixth form association, have created a petition to challenge the government thinking in doing away with these qualifications. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/592642 A good debate needs to be had on the future of level 3 qualifications
