Resitting AS Level in Autumn?

Apologies as I'm sure this is covered on one of the wider threads, but I couldn't instantly find the information needed.

DS has only taken 1 AS level this year, so I've not really been following the process that closely. (my stress levels have still not recovered from last year)
If he wants to (re)sit this subject, will he be able to do so in the autumn (as per last year)?
Does only the higher grade stand (as per last year) or will the result of the exam become his new grade?
Many thanks

Is he planning on stopping at AS or finishing the full A Level course?

Stopping at AS. It's not offered as an A Level at his sixth form (or he probably would have taken it).

It's in the subject he probably wants to study at university, hence getting a better grade might be an advantage for applications if he can get it before he applies.

There will be a full set of exams in autumn so he’ll be able to resit, and as far as I understand from the governments response to consultation the highest grade of the 2 will stand

The parliamentary research briefing at researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-9045/CBP-9045.pdf only shows autumn exams as an option in England.
